CROSS COUNTRY: The Highlander Girls and Boys Cross Country Team started their season strong with the Cypress XC Relay in Tomball on August 14th. This past Friday, TWHS hosted our annual Friday Night Lights Invitational at Bear Branch Park. This meet brought together many of the top teams in Texas. In addition to the superior caliber of high school teams in attendance, McCullough Junior High had a brillant presence with both 7th & 8th grade girls and boys teams. Congratulations to ALL the Highlanders on their incredible performances – the girls and boys teams swept every event at FNL!

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:
The newest CCC Newsletter released today (Friday, Sep. 3)! Follow this link for more information on these topics: our Hours & Services, in-person transcripts & rec letters, testing (SAT, TSI, and ASVAB), our re-scheduled FAFSA meeting, and College Visits (including adjustments to accommodate CISD’s Level 4 COVID protocols). Looking for the CCC parent night info? You can find it here with the other parent night presentations.
TL;DR -- The most important information for seniors this week? Upcoming testing options, which are also mentioned in the Counselor’s Corner (these are so important that they are worth mentioning twice). All seniors are eligible (and highly encouraged) to take a test on Wednesday, Oct. 13 during our school-wide testing day. It’s tempting to sleep-in but knocking out the SAT or TSI can be a much better use of time!
- SAT registration deadline for seniors is Sep. 13. To register and secure their spot for the SAT, seniors simply need to pay the $36 item in their School Cash Online account by Sep. 13. All seniors will pay to take the test. After the testing date, those who took the test and qualify will have their testing fee refunded.
- TSI registration deadline is Oct. 4. Seniors will register for that test by completing this Google form by Oct. 4
- ASVAB interest survey by Oct. 4. Juniors and seniors interested in taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) to gain greater insight into their aptitudes in preparation to join the civilian workforce or military enlistment should complete this Google form by Oct. 4. The interest survey will assist us in scheduling.
We have loved seeing so many seniors during off-periods, lunch, and advisory! Please, continue to hang out in the CCC with us. If you haven’t seen us for senior orientation yet, you can look forward to that next week (when we answer our most common questions about transcripts and recommendation letter requests). For those who have already attended senior orientation, this is a reminder that requests for counselor or teacher recommendation letters must be done in-person at the CCC (not online) after you complete the brag sheet. Current students can request official transcripts online in Naviance (log in to Naviance through your SSO). For unofficial transcripts, bring $1 cash to the CCC in room 251.
We invite students to stop by the CCC whenever you’re seeking a spot to work on your applications or essays and any time you have questions!

STUDENT COUNCIL: Student Council has had a very busy yet exciting start to our school year. Our first two meetings occurred on back-to-back Mondays and we had over 200 students attend. At the meeting on 8/30, our committee projects began. We wrote notes to our teachers, set goals for the school year, and decorated bathroom mirrors with encouraging words. StuCo also organized and conducted a campus cleanup on 8/31. We are looking forward to seeing the results of these projects and how they benefit both our school and community. Our next meeting will occur on 9/13 and we will have a spirit night/social at Mod Pizza on 9/20. Come join us!
SCUBA: We currently have around 12 members attending our Fall Dive Meetup at Mammoth Lake on Labor Day (September 6th); all certified divers, including parents, are welcome to attend and participate! The lake is opening on the holiday just for us! It’s a 2-hour drive from The Woodlands so plan to leave home in time to arrive by 10am. We’ll get a couple of dives and if you’d like to go to lunch at the restaurant next door afterward we can do that too! You must sign a waiver to dive there (filled out prior to arrival); please consult their website at https://mammothlaketexas.com for the waiver as well as details on entry fees, equipment rental if needed, and all the cool stuff we will see in the lake—there are military aircraft, a school bus, fish and turtles, and much more in the water for us to experience!
Our first Club Meeting of the year is Monday, September 13th, from 3-4pm in the Senior Campus LGI—freshman can take the Activities Shuttle from the 9th Grade Campus to the Senior Campus. All are welcome to attend—you do NOT have to be scuba certified to attend! Learn about opportunities to try scuba for the first time, certification, and get free snacks! We will elect our officers for this school year so please come and vote for President, Vice President, and Secretary. Each meeting attended (including this one!) will get your name in the drawing for some nice prizes at the end of the school year! Join our club group on the BAND App on your phone by searching for “TWHS Scuba Club,” and visit our web site at twhsscuba.club (not .com!).
TWHS BASS FISHING TEAM: The Board has decided to replace the previously announced team meeting with our Angler Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 11th at Lake Paloma in Creekside from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. This will offer a great opportunity for new team members to get to know each other, learn more about fishing and the team. All new members are invited, as well as any returning members who would like a fishing instruction refresher. This meeting and workshop are optional for returning members.
We will offer stations for anglers to rotate through in small, socially distanced groups. Board volunteers and team captains will cover casting techniques, including pitching, flipping and target casting; knot tying; choosing the right bait for different conditions; as well as a gear check to review rod/reel combos, line and lure selection and tackle box. Anglers should bring gear they plan to use for tournaments including rods/reels, tackle, and hat/glasses along with water and a folding chair for parents if desired. The club does not supply fishing equipment.
The Workshop will include a walk-through of what to expect on an inshore tournament day, including short discussions on tournament rules, the judges' role, safety, fish care and resources for learning about fishing.
Bass fishing team members, please plan to park by Rob Fleming Aquatic Center and look for our tent near Creekside Forest Drive. Parents are welcome and encouraged to stay and participate. Spirit wear orders for in-stock items will be available for pickup.

As we are completing enrollment for this school year, we will be sending emails or letters home if your student has any overdue vaccines. If you receive one of those letters, please take care of it promptly so that your student may remain enrolled.
If your student requires any medications on campus, it must be checked in by a parent or guardian. All medications must be in their original, labeled container, unexpired, and we ask that you provide no more than a 30-day supply. We highly encourage students to carry their own Epi-Pen or inhaler; those do need to be accompanied by a form that is completed by your doctor each school year.
As of September 3rd, positive COVID cases are to be reported by parents by logging in to your child’s SSO, going to the COVID Central app, and following the prompts there. You will receive information about isolation, attendance, a return to school date, as well as an email confirmation.
Also in that app, you can schedule a free rapid test for your student at the Conroe ISD Police Department. Appointment slots do fill up rapidly, but evening and Saturday appointments are being added for September.

THE WOODLANDS HIGH SCHOOL ART TRUST: Submissions for 2021 are now OPEN!
Have you ever noticed the 49 works of art by established Texas artists that are permanently displayed in the hallways at school? This is The Woodlands High School Art Trust Collection and we are celebrating our 11th year! This collection of art works has been selected and purchased by our students over the past 10 years. Each year we add new works to the collection and our next selection process has begun. Submissions opened on September 1st and will be accepted until October 10th for consideration into our collection for 2021. We invite established Texas artists who have had work accepted into a juried show and are at least 22 years old to submit works to be considered for acquisition in 2021. If you know an established Texas Artist that might be interested, please pass this information on! Click HERE to learn more.
In mid-October, our student committee will narrow down the works submitted to 12-15 artworks that will be voted on by the entire student body in mid-November. Posters of the artworks will be on view at school in November and the original pieces will be displayed in the cafeteria just prior to voting. The students will purchase as many as possible of the pieces that receive the most votes on November 18.
The artworks are purchased through funds set aside by Student Council from the Homecoming Dance, however, the framing, lighting and conservation of these pieces need funding. Consider helping with that funding and show your support for The Woodlands High School Art Trust by joining our "One Hundred Friends of Art." Our goal is to have 100 arts supporters make an annual donation to support our cause. Donations are tax deductible and start as low as $10!! Visit our website to make a contribution: www.twhsat.org
The Woodlands High School Art Trust (TWHSAT) a 501(c)3 organization, was established in 2011 to help maintain, conserve and display the student-selected, student-purchased collection of established artists at The Woodlands High School. The vision for the TWHS Art Trust is to see the art collection grow each year and to have it extend through the hallways of the high school. Pre-COVID we offered FREE tours of our collection to schools and other groups by appointment and we hope to resume these tours as soon as we are able.
Other than the public sculptures around The Woodlands, this is the ONLY permanent collection of art available to the public. It is seen by THOUSANDS of people every day. Please consider supporting this unique collection that sets us apart from other public high schools and strengthens our goal of being one of the best high schools in the state and country.
For more information on The Woodlands High School Art Trust please visit our website: www.twhsat.org or contact Susan Cosculluela at twhsat@gmail.com
