Welcome to CEA
Civil Engineering and Architecture
Last week
Upcoming assignments
1. Engineering poster - each student chose either a famous civil engineer or an architect and they are making a poster on their choice. The poster may be either digital or by hand, and will be displayed in the school. They had Thursday and Friday in class to work on it and will have Monday in class to work on it as well. It is due Monday.
2. Model - each student has chosen an architectural style and they will be making a model of their choice. They will present their model to the class. This assignment will be due towards the end of the six weeks. The model can be as detailed and complex as they want, but it needs to show the main components of their style. I cannot wait to see their product!

What is PLTW?
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we deliver PLTW programs to more than 8,000 elementary, middle, and high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. PLTW schools can be found in rural, urban, and suburban districts; across all income levels; as well as in public, private, and charter schools.
PLTW’s success in preparing students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed has been recognized by colleges and universities, Fortune 500 businesses, and numerous national organizations including Change the Equation, the Social Impact Exchange, and more.
Why STEM?
The U.S. Department of Commerce shows that since 2015, STEM jobs have increased by 24.4% while non-STEM jobs have increased by 4% STEM jobs continue to be unfilled due to a lack of qualified applicants. STEM workers earn significantly more over their lifetime than their non-STEM counterparts (29% more than non-STEM workers). Those holding STEM degrees from college will earn 12% more regardless if they work in a STEM field or not.
However, STEM education is more than just a focus on these fields / areas of study. STEM initiatives foster 21st century skills, such as problem-solving, teamwork, critical thinking, creativity, communication, and digital literacy, which are in high demand across all jobs in today’s global economy.

What is the PLTW CEA class?
In PLTW Engineering, students engage in open-ended problem solving, learn and apply the engineering design process, and use the same industry-leading technology and software as are used in the world’s top companies. Students are immersed in design as they investigate topics such as sustainability, mechatronics, forces, structures, aerodynamics, digital electronics and circuit design, manufacturing, and the environment, which gives them an opportunity to learn about different engineering disciplines before beginning post-secondary education or careers.
Civil Engineering and Architecture (CEA, 1 year)
Students learn important aspects of building and site design and development. They apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3-D architectural design software.
