Your Principal's Message.....

As we enter March, our winter activities begin to wrap-up and we look forward to the arrival of spring. Spring activities will be beginning as early as this week. We encourage students to get involved. One of our goals remains that 100 % of students get involved in campus life either through participating in an activity or being a member of the student body and cheering on your peers. We know that extracurricular involvement adds greatly to the educational experience that your son or daughter receives at Washington, and as the spring activities get ready to start, we ask that you encourage your child to be involved in an activity.

Midterm is March 24th, but we encourage parents to not wait until then to stay informed and up-to-date about your child’s academic progress. A great way to stay informed is by routinely checking and/or downloading the Parent View app and staying in contact with your child’s teacher or counselor for assistance.

While our COVID numbers are down, our absenteeism is not. We want to ensure students are learning, progressing and reaching mastery. Beginning this Wednesday, March 3rd, we will be running the Intervention Day schedule we utilized in December to help students get caught up. We have built 45 minutes into the school day, between 2nd and 3rd period, where students have access to all of their teachers. If your student is struggling or behind in their work, please encourage them to make use of this time to go see their teachers. As always, teachers are also available before and after school for help.

There are many great things happening at WHS. We just culminated Black History Month. Our BSUE did an excellent job of creating opportunities to get WHS students and the community involved. They were also recently featured on Keloland News. Both our boys and girls basketball teams are currently ranked #1 as they head into the SDHSAA Sweet 16 and we are hoping to cheer them on at the State tourneys. Our Oral Interp and Debate teams made a strong showing this past weekend at the National Qualifying Tournament and look to replicate their success this upcoming weekend at State. A special congratulations to Riley Nold and Catherine Liu as they were named National Merit Finalists! These are examples of the great things that can happen when students get involved, find something they are good at, and use their talents to give back.

Parents and guardians, we thank you for continued support of Washington High School - as it is a great time to be an Involved Warrior!

Go Warriors!

A Vision for the Future

By Dr. Jane Stavem, Superintendent

The Sioux Falls School District enjoys a long history of academic success. Formally established July 3, 1871, our community will celebrate the District’s 150th Anniversary with some fun and engaging events planned over the next several months. We hope you will join in the sesquicentennial activities when they are announced in celebration of public education in Sioux Falls!

From the early days of education in a one-room schoolhouse at the corner of 13th Street and Main Avenue to opening two new schools in the Fall of 2021, it is humbling to think of the thousands of students who have walked the halls and earned a diploma from the Sioux Falls School District. Those graduates with the help of their teachers have, indeed, impacted our community, state, and nation with countless, positive contributions.

Looking back to reflect on success is always inspiring. However, looking ahead to chart the course of education in Sioux Falls for the next 150 years brings with it an even more exciting opportunity. For the past month, our team has been visiting schools to meet with staff and listen to their ideas for how we can make the Sioux Falls School District the best in the nation. These conversations have already identified some consistent needs across the District. Further, they have allowed me to see the passion and commitment of our staff and the hopes and dreams they have for their students on a raw and personal level.

This month, we are meeting with parents and community members to learn what priorities they believe will propel our students into future success. We are asking for input on factors that need to be considered as we start this work, barriers to be addressed if we are to achieve our goals, and key priorities that will move our schools forward and bring exciting opportunities for our students.

While challenging in many aspects, the COVID-19 pandemic has allowed public schools to reassess educational delivery and the social and emotional needs of students. It has challenged us to question and, where necessary, change the status quo. Now is the time to dream big and set our expectations for the future. It is exciting to think of the possibilities that lie ahead for students in the Sioux Falls Public Schools.

Winter Activities Plan

Sioux Falls School District Families –

Last week, the Sioux Falls School Board acknowledged the recommendation for continued operating of activities in Tier 3 of the District’s Return to Play for Activities plan. These guidelines and protocols have provided the opportunity for safety at activities and ultimately support the primary goal of continuing a traditional school setting in the Sioux Falls School District. The Activities Department’s top priority is, and will be, the health and safety of our student participants, staff, and spectators as we continue to provide activities for the 2020-2021 school year.

Under the Tier 3 Return to Play plan:
• Events will be made available in digital format when possible. All Spectators will be highly encouraged to watch the live stream for these events when offered.
• High School Students are welcome to attend. If a Sioux Falls School District High School Student wishes to attend events they will be required to purchase an activity symbol to be printed on their student ID. The student ID with the printed activity symbol, admits one, the bearer, to all SFSD regular season athletic contests. This type of pass is secured at the respective high school’s activities office.
• Adult, 0 to Pre-Kindergarten aged Children, Elementary and Middle School will have restrictions on who may or may not attend.

If you have specific questions pertaining to this plan, visit our frequently ask question’s document (Specified Event Attendance FAQ Sheet), submit your question or comment on our athletics website or contact your respective school’s activities principal/athletic coordinator.
