Woodbury Junior-Senior High School - Weekly Newsletter

Message from the Principal
Hello parents,
This week's newsletter contains a number of celebrations including December's Students of the Month & Employees' of the Month. Alumni from the Class of 2019 returned to share wisdom they have gleaned from outside the comfortable confines of our school. Select students also attended a leadership retreat with peers from around South Jersey; many of the ideas they discussed have already sparked positive interest in the broader student body.
Hope you enjoy the features below. Happy New Year!

Mrs. Emenecker and Mrs. Corley's Classes Write Realistic Fiction
Mrs. Emenecker's and Mrs. Corley's 7th grade Literacy students are working on realistic fiction stories during Writer's Workshop. In this lesson students learn about losing themselves in their stories as they write. The goal is to become their character and write as if they are experiencing the events of the plot themselves. The began class in mini-lesson by having a discussion about the concept. Then Mrs. Emenecker modeled the idea. After the mini-lesson, students continued to draft their stories trying the technique themselves while Mrs. Corley and Mrs. Emenecker conferenced with individual students.

Re: SAT Prep - Reading and Math Course
We have enlisted Ivy Bound Test Prep to tailor a convenient SAT prep classes for our students at a reduced price. The Ivy Bound Instructors have a zeal for teaching teens, know the test well, and have scored in the top 1% on the SAT or ACT. While not an endorsement, this is a heads-up to a good opportunity over three Wednesday afternoons.
We've selected Ivy Bound because of its strong reputation, its thoroughness, and its top 1% instructor standard. Also, we happen to like that it's still a small company: Ivy Bound's Founder and Lead Instructor, Mark Greenstein, still speaks personally with every student in the program who wishes to call the Help Line for SAT Writing prep each month, and communicates with parents by e-mail and Sunday conference calls.
Through our partnership, we have a significant discount. For three sessions, you will be charged just $50 (Regular tuition for a short class is $450).
Ivy Bound Director, Mark Greenstein, will also be giving a short half-hour parent seminar on the final day of class, “Know the SAT / How to Get the Most from the Course”.
For the Class of 2021, Ivy Bound is committed to helping throughout junior year, with e-mail reinforcement to extend skills and supplements for vocabulary absorption. Our goal is to have students crush the SAT on March 25 when we host an SAT School Day session at no cost for all Juniors, but be ready to test again May 2 and/or June 2.

1. What is your "go to" song for the journey to school?
I listen to podcasts and audiobooks on the way to work. I love podcasts because there are so many options. There is always something to listen to that fits my mood perfectly. Currently, I’m listening to the book Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell.2. Do you have a favorite saying or quote that you try to live by?
“It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome.” William James. I love this quote and often share it with students. It’s a simple concept but can be difficult to practice. Having the proper attitude is essential to success.
3. What is one of your hidden talents?
In my spare time, I like to draw and paint. I often make silly cartoons for friends and family.
4. What are your "trapped on a desert island" books or movies?
I would take The Sandman Omnibus by Neil Gaiman. The Sandman is full of art, both graphic and literary. I would also take Sirens of Titans by Kurt Vonnegut. Every time I read Vonnegut I find something new and comforting.
5. If you could take your students on a field trip to anywhere in the world, where would you take them?
I love to visit Washington, DC with students. There is so much to do and see and most of it is free. When I lived in Richmond, I took students there at least once a year to experience our government in action or to explore the museums.
6. What is one piece of advice you would give to your students?
READ, READ, READ!!! As much as you can, as often as you can.
