Week 18 Recap

One Week to Go

It was another fantastic week on campus as we approach the end of Q2. Most of our students took midterm assessments, and DIBELS (K-3) reading assessments this week so we can measure our progress through half the year and adjust our pacing, instruction, and interventions for all students moving forward into 3rd Quarter. We are excited for our Reindeer Run tomorrow at 10:00 am as well as our final week of 2022 with our Holiday parties as well as our Viper Pride Assembly on Friday before our 1/2 day early release at 12:05. If you need any gift ideas for teachers or staff, check out the SV Staff Favorites link.

We want to remind everyone of our parking lot procedures during dismissal. Parents are not permitted to park in our parking lot after 3:20 to pick up students. We will also not permit students to cross into the parking lot and walk out onto Rose Garden to meet their vehicle. If you are choosing to pick up your students off campus, they must exit through the Viper Gate near the bike rack, or out the 3-5 gate on the southwest corner of our campus. Next week we will be monitoring and enforcing these policies to maintain a safe and orderly campus. We will not be allowing cars into the parking lot from 3:20 - 3:45 unless they are coming onto campus for a reason unrelated to dismissal.

Please take some time to review the map and procedures below and be aware that we will be blocking access to our parking lot in the afternoon from 3:15 to 3:45 pm starting Monday and have asked Glendale PD to monitor Rose Garden for any cars illegally stopped or parked.

Welcome to SV Nurse Jessie!

Hi! I’m Jessie. I have been helping out at Sierra Verde this fall and I’m excited to become part of the team. I’ll be your nurse on Mondays & Wednesdays. I have been a nurse for 15 years. I was born & raised in Oklahoma, GO SOONERS! We moved to AZ in 2009 and lived here for 9 years. We took a short break and moved across the country before deciding our final move back to the desert. I have 3 children, 2 are currently at SV and one to follow next year. I’m happy to have the opportunity to work with the great kids and staff here.

Priority Open Enrollment 23-24

Open Enrollment is underway for the 2023– 2024 school year. Through Open Enrollment, your child has the opportunity to attend any school of their choice, if capacity permits. If you currently have an 8th grader that will be attending Mountain Ridge High School next year and Mountain Ridge is not your home school, you need to apply for open enrollment by December 05, 2022 for priority consideration. If you have another student starting school next year in any grade and your current student is on open enrollment, you should also apply by December 2022. Priority will be given to siblings of currently enrolled students if grade level capacity permits. You must apply online at dvusd.org/openenrollment. It is not necessary to reapply for Open Enrollment for currently enrolled students at Sierra Verde, only new students wishing to attend.

For those of you with family, friends, or neighbors looking to attend SV next year, it is essential that you get an application ASAP and prior to the the closing of our priority window. In most grades, we typically have to waitlist most students if they apply after December.

Families will be notified if the application has been approved or denied via email in January 2023. Upon notification, a registration must be completed online, no later than 10 days after notification of the decision, or the student potentially forfeits the approved Open Enrollment and may need to reapply.

If you have any questions, please contact the front office at 623-376-4800.

Mindfulness Monday Challenge of the Week

“Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting.” It seems daily stress often results in frustration and a sense of impending urgency to get things done. The ability to tolerate delay, accept setbacks, and go with the flow without getting upset requires patience, especially during the holiday season. There are so many demands on us, that it truly requires some intentional planning. Filling our “patience toolbox” ahead of time is a great way to develop the skill. One way to deal with stress is to take three long, slow breaths and hold them. This has physical benefits as well as helping us center our minds. Having a “happy place” where we can go while dealing with difficult situations is also effective. Perhaps there is a garden, a beautiful view, or the shore of a calm beach that you can conjure in your mind. And lastly, positive self-talk is an excellent way to develop patience and positivity.

The next few weeks, take time to make sure your toolbox is full, and remember that patience and perseverance can make difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.
