Playing Fairly
Learning to play fairly with others is often a difficult task for children. When it comes to school, the concept of sharing is taught to them in various ways. However, as a parent, you can also help teach them how important it is to share with and be kind to their peers and family. By following a few helpful tips, you’ll be able to ensure your child plays fairly with and shares with others. If your child has siblings, many toys will become the object of competition. The ‘winner’ will get to play with the toy in the end, leaving the other child to cry and fuss. If this becomes a persistent scenario, start intervening and taking the toy away from the dominant child with a simple statement that it’s the other child’s turn. That way, you’re teaching your child about sharing without directly communicating about it. Actions will speak more loudly than words most of the time, so you need to exhibit the behaviors you want to see in your children first. Combining actions with words provides the best opportunity for teaching sharing behaviors. If your child has a favorite toy they like to play with or activity they like to participate in at school, try and find out if they are actively sharing and letting other people join in on the fun. Talking to children about the benefits of sharing (how fun it can be, how they can make new friends and have new experiences, etc.) may encourage them to share on their own.
