Letter from the Principal
Steggie Families-
Next week begins a fun celebration of reading. McElwain Elementary presents One Book One McElwain featuring Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We have a number of activities lined up for students to engage them in this reading. Our K-1 students will have a classroom picture book. Our 2nd through 5th grade students will all receive a chapter book to keep and read at home. All students will participate in the activities each day. We look forward to this first annual One Book One McElwain and hope that it will be a celebration of reading for years to come.
Stay Well, Stay Safe

Important Information for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Families Regarding State Testing
Dear Parent/Guardian,
The Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessments are administered each year in Colorado to students to measure their progress in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. All students in 3rd through 8th grade take CMAS English language arts and mathematics. Only students in 5th, 8th, and 11th grade take CMAS science. This year no students in our district will take CMAS social studies. In 3rd and 4th grade students have 6 testing sessions, and in 5th grade students have 9 testing sessions.
The CMAS assessments will be given at your child’s school sometime between March 29th and May 14th. Your child’s school will develop a testing schedule and communicate with you about when your child will be testing. Our school will also be prepared to provide meaningful assignments and coursework should you decide to opt your child out of the tests. Please note that the CMAS assessments must be given in person, even for students who are attending school remotely.
Our school will follow all public health guidelines to ensure the health and safety of everyone in the school building during testing. Social distancing will be followed, hand washing/sanitizing stations will be provided, and everyone in the building will be required to wear a mask.
Ultimately, the decision about whether or not your child participates in CMAS testing is up to you. If you are interested in opting your child out of the CMAS assessments, please utilize this form (link here). We encourage you to complete the form as quickly as possible, preferably by March 10th.
More information about the CMAS assessment can be found at cde.state.co.us/assessment/resources. Otherwise, please contact Brooke Tolmachoff (brooke.tolmachoff@adams12.org) or Vicki Murray (vicki.murray@adasm12.org) if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Sara Olson, Principal
