Niwa Science Fair
This week I enjoyed spending time with a group of Year 7&8 ākonga while their science fair investigations were judged by several local scientists. They had all invested a great deal of their time into their science fair tests and background research. It was great to see them all feel so proud of themselves.
Parent-School-Link (PSL)
Last Thursday evening our PSL committee met to share ideas for future activities that raise funds to support our school, promote social interaction in our community, and support community members through pastoral care.
Schools rely heavily on support groups like our PSL - they help to bring the school alive and build a sense of community. Thank you to Fran for taking the time to get PSL up and running again this year. We still need several new members for this group, and volunteers to hold key positions in the committee. Please look out for ways to get involved in our school.
Covid Vulnerability Survey
A reminder to Please complete this survey - to let us know if you or your household members have increased vulnerability to contracting Covid-19, so that we can make a decision about mask-wearing, going forward. The survey closes tomorrow. Thank you.
We are all looking forward to two big family events: next week’s Whānau evening - an evening of performances by all of our students and an introduction to our wellbeing programme - and our Grandparents’ Mass on Monday 26 September. Madeline and the teachers have started their preparations for this Mass.
Take care, kind regards and God bless

SARAH'S MESSAGE
SAUSAGE SIZZLE
We are after one more BBQ and some more helpers to cook sausages at the sausage sizzle next Thursday evening between 4.30 and 5.15pm. If you are able to help, please email Sarah on sarah.fountain@sfds.school.nz
TENNIS
The annual Wellington and Kapi Mana Primary and Intermediate Tennis Tournament
This information has already been emailed to you but here is a reminder about this an optional tournament.
The girls' tournament is on Tuesday 20 September (back up date Friday 23 September), starting at 8.30am.
The boys' tournament is on Wednesday 21 September (back up date Thursday 22 September), starting at 8.30am.
Both tournaments are being held at the Renouf Tennis Centre, 60 Brooklyn Road, Brooklyn.
There is an open grade for year 7/8 students and a year 6 and under grade for all other year groups. The draw will be posted at the venue on the morning of the tournament.
Players entered must have played tennis before and have knowledge of the rules of tennis and how to score. Players must also bring their own tennis racquet for the event and wear our school PE uniform.
Finalists and semi finalists of each grade will qualify for the Tennis Central Regional Finals to be held in Palmerston North on 16 November.
The school won't be sending any staff to these tournaments. This means you will need to transport your child to and from the venue (or you could share transport with others) and also help supervise the SFDS players during the day - we probably only need one adult there at a time. Please do not enter your child in the tournament if you are unable to help. I will send a list of those attending once I have the confirmed list so you can organise to share transport if you'd like.
If you would like me to register your child, please let me know via return email on sarah.fountain@sfds.school.nz by Friday 2 September at 3pm. Suzanne will then add the $20 entry fee to your Kindo account. Payment will be required by Tuesday 6 September at 3pm. If we don't receive payment in time, then I won't be able to enter your child.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
YUMMY STICKERS
We have to send these in at the end of the term, so please send any Yummy sticker collection sheets or cut outs from the bags of apples to the school office. Many thanks for your support with this initiative. The more stickers we collect, the more free sports gear we receive.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
Pink Shoes to the Vatican – What’s it all about?
On 19 September 1893, 129 years ago, women in Aotearoa New Zealand won the right to vote, endorsing their human and God-given right to participate fully in society. Yet, Catholic women still do not have the right to participate fully in the life of the church. Therefore, we are protesting at being excluded from authorised leadership and decision-making within the Church.
So, on Sunday 18 September from 12-2pm, we will create an installation from the steps of Parliament made up of the shoes of hundreds of Catholic women who have gone before us, walking and working invisibly, heading towards Sacred Heart Cathedral in Hill Street.
Please join us at Parliament to offer your support and appreciation of all that Catholic women have contributed to the church in Aotearoa over the decades. Thank you.
