Our Reading Has Taken a Turn
Strange & Mysterious Short Stories Unit
Welcome to Marking Period Two!
We recently ended our first marking period and report cards were sent home with each student for them to review with their parents/guardians. We are proud of everyone of our students who have taken on learning to balance being indepedent (recording assignments, checking the daily blog, reading directions thoroughly) while also knowing when to ask for help. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to contact us. We appreciate all of your support!
Grammar: The Foundation of Writing
Grammar has entered our class routine! We have introduced the review of simple and compound sentences while focusing on the FANBOYS (coordinating conjunctions) and fancy compound sentences. Recently we took a quiz on these topics in which the students wrote their own sentences. Please ask your child to share their sentences with you as their creativity was tapped into!
STAR Reading
As a class we took another STAR Reading benchmark assessment in order to check in with how our students are growing while also allowing them to have an opportunity to update their ZPD. Their ZPD, or Zone of Proximal Development, lets us know at which level of books each individual child is able to comprehend independently. *Reminder: Two novels are to be read in eighth grade per marking period and an Accelerated Reader quiz needs to be taken with a score of a 70 or above for each one. The due date for this marking period is January 28th.
New Seats!
We have assigned new seats for the start of a new marking period.
"The Landlady"
This week we read "The Landlady" as a part of our strange and mysterious short stories unit. We especially focused on intuition. After reading the story in our textbooks, we watched the video below to compare and contrast the two sources. After, we talked about what was changed for the video and the impact it had to the story.

"Lamb to the Slaughter"
We also read another Roald Dahl story called "Lamb to the Slaughter" in which we discussed allusions and dramatic irony. Please ask your child about the four times dramatic irony was used and how it impacted the story. Like "The Landlady", we watched a video to compare it to the text.
