Entrepreneurs, innovators, academics, and media converged on the Evonik Degussa Auditorium on May 3rd to hear the latest from top Alabama start-ups. A panel of expert judges from around the state determined which businesses they thought would be most successful--and ultimately create the most jobs in Alabama. Winners are listed below:
Carbon Nanotubes Engineered Surfaces (CNTES) - $8,000
CNTES has developed an application using nanotechnology to grow carbon nanotubes on the surface of engineered materials. This process has been proven to enhance interlaminate strength by as much as 40%. Launchpad funds will go assist the entrepreneur in achieving 70% interlaminate strength improvement, giving the company a much needed product worldwide.
Nutripilot - $38,000
Nutripilot aims to direct people suffering from certain medical conditions or trying to maintain certain lifestyles to the proper foods. Launchpad funds will assist Nutripilot in launching a smartphone and tablet app as well as marketing the product throughout the nation.
Exscien Corporation - $54,000
Exscien is a biotechnology firm that has developed a method for repairing damage to mitochondrial DNA. Launchpad funds will go to producing the DNA repair enzyme used in their process as well as the purchase and testing of human lungs. If successful, their method would greatly improve lung transplants and could possibly be used to repair damage from a variety of diseases.
