Some thoughts for the starting school year
September 2023 Edition
Mr Baffoes' Reflection
The Value of the month for September was Ambition. We have spent the month thinking about the many things that we have a strong desire to achieve.
We are inspired by 3 different generations of Jessop women who have succeeded in developing the right habits that have led to them fulfilling their ambitions.
DD Brown is a young aspiring author who has already had some of her amazing work published. DD attended Jessop a few years ago and is now in Secondary School. She is on the road to achieving her ambition as an author and is committed to sharing her talent.
Cristale, is an aspiring musician who also left Jessop more recently. She has achieved great accolades and has also recently broken into film!
Last Months Value was Ambition
Ebony Rainsford Brent is another former pupil who’s ambition for cricket took her to the heights of the England women’s national team.
The achievements of these 3 former pupils have inspired us to continue to work on the habits that will help us to achieve our own ambitions this year!

Teacher Meet and Greet
What a fantastic way to the start the new academic year! Thank you parents, carers and children for attending our very first Teacher Meet and Greet afternoon on Friday 11th September! Once again the PTA outperformed themselves and organised a great community event. While parents had the opportunity to meet and greet their children’s new teachers, the children had fun on the bouncy castle, joining in with the band, enjoying refreshments and just having fun! We are all very excited about this year ahead and we would like to thank you in advance for your continued support.

Attendance
Central to raising standards in all schools and ensuring all pupils can fulfil their potential, is the need for children to attend school regularly to benefit from their education.
There is a strong link between good learning, high achievement, rapid progress and developing good social skills with excellent attendance.
We want to take this opportunity to outline our expectations for school attendance this academic year.
If your child arrives at school from 9.01am they will be marked as LATE, if they arrive after 9.30am they will be classed as “late after the register is closed” and their attendance is classed as absent for the morning session. As the registers would have already been returned to the Department for Education.
Regular poor punctuality can also have a negative effect on your child’s attendance as well as their academic learning. Being 6 minutes late each day equals 30 minutes of missed learning every week.
If your child’s attendance drops below 90%, we will need to share our concerns with the Local Authority Education Welfare Officer at Lambeth Council.

Class Assemblies
Dolphin Class proved that if you have a burning desire to achieve or do something you are ambitious and will be able to achieve things beyond your dreams. We were given a outstanding performance from the children of Dolphin Class who were not afraid to show off their talents on the stage and in doing so shared with us their ambitions. If you fast forward a couple of decades you are looking at our future poets, professional footballers, doctors nurses and even pilots! As Dolphin Class reminded us these ambitions start with habits of perseverance, patience and much more!
We are so proud of you all Dolphin Class keep reaching for those stars and Going for Gold!

Key Stage 1
Lower Key Stage 2
Key Stage 2
Upper Key Stage 2
Upper Key Stage 2 students have really and truly hit the ground running this past month!
Year 6 children have already started to prep for their SATs, alongside diving headfirst into their ‘Wakanda Forever’ topic!
Year 5 children have been busy immersing themselves in their ‘Time Travellers’ topic.
Take a look at their gorgeous work! Well done everyone!
Lower Key Stage 2
Year 3’s had a great start to this academic year and have settled in well into Gorilla and Elephant classes!
The Year 3’s topic for this term is Ancient Civilizations. The children will use maps, atlases and globes to help them locate continents and countries. During the term, they will be comparing the physical and human features of Ancient Egypt and Greece. The Year 3’s will also be attending weekly swimming lessons at the Brixton Recreation Centre and we are excited to see how their skills and confidence will develop over the course of time. They thoroughly enjoyed their first lesson!
Just like Year 3, the Year 4 children have settled in well into Lion class! Their topic for this term is Rotten Romans. They will learn about the impacts that the Romans have had on our daily life, and things that we use today which were introduced by them! They will also understand how Britain looked before, during and after the invasion.
Just look at their amazing Topic Title Pages - well done Lions!
Key Stage 1
Toys Glorious Toys
Year 1 have fully immersed themselves in our Topic Toys. In our History lessons we will be looking at toys throughout history. How toys have changed over time and how they have evolved and developed. We have started with bringing in our own toys (living memory).
We also made and wrote instructions on how to make ‘Forky’ from ‘Toy Story’ in our English lessons. In our Geography lesson Children explored “our school” - showing their toy around.
Well Done Year 1 we are proud of you. Keep Going for Gold!
Early Years Foundation Stage
Teddy Bear’s Picnic!
The children in EYFS got off to a fine start, and settled quickly into their new school and with their peers. We had a great start to the year where parents came to our first welcome party aimed at getting parents to meet and greet the parents and children in EYFS. A massive thank you for making the day such a success.
A big Welcome to our new starters to our Jessop Family this is the beginning of our learning journey together. How well everyone has settled into their new classes. We are so proud of your achievements already.!
Food Glorious Food
The Young Marketeers got the chance to experience some cooking techniques with our visitors from the Food Matters Charitable organisation. They cooked up a storm using vegetables to make a nutritious Panzanella Salad and a Crunchy Corn and Pepper Salsa. The young Marketeers were joined by other KS2 children who were taught about the origins of the ingredients and given tips on how to improve their cooking skills and stay safe in the kitchen. The result was a big thumbs up from all children who took part and enjoyed the feast fit for a King! The children did not want their teachers to miss out on the amazing meal and ensured that their teachers had the chance to taste their culinary skills. Many thanks to #FoodMatters for allowing the children to embark on real life skills which will stay with them forever. To find out more about Food Matters click on the link here.
Try the recipes you will not be disappointed!

Music Masters
Music Masters kicked off the new academic year with a bang by inviting parents to their very first ever Freshers Week!!! And what a success it was. Parents had the opportunity to listen to performances by our very own Keystage 2 orchestra, listen to an ex Jessop pupil perform a real masterpiece on the violin as well as meet and greet the Music Masters team. We are excited about the year ahead. If you have any questions with regards to your child’s lesson times, do not hesitate to get in touch with the school office.
Parent Reading Drop In
Our first Parent Reading Drop In for this academic year was a massive success! Thank you to all parents, carers, grandparents and siblings for attending this event. It was wonderful to see so many of you reading with your children and fostering the love for reading. We are already looking forward to the next drop in session. Remember to continue to read with your children at home!
