What's Up At Marshall?
Our Leadership classes were able to attend a Veteran's Day Celebration last Thursday.
Per Seargent Emond:
"The Marshall Drill and Color Guard teams finished our season with a BANG! Both Varsity teams had 1st place finishes! JV teams had 2nd and 3rd place finishes! What a FUN and competitive City Drill Tournament!"
Upcoming Events
The Science Fair is quickly approaching - November 15 from 5:30pm- 8:00pm. Here is some information from Ms. Western:
"Our Project Based Learning students have been working hard on their science fair projects for the past couple of months, and they’re excited to showcase them on Tuesday, November 15th from 5:30-8:00pm in Marshall’s gym. They experimented on growing plants, growing crystals, the best ice cream ingredients, how to catch flies, the best conditions to do your math assignments in, the best hair dye, if staring at a mirror makes you go crazy…and many more! Come check out their results on 11/15 and see some of the amazing things our math enrichment students are doing here at Marshall!"
Starting in January, Marshall will host a Spanish teacher on Thursday evenings. Every other week will be in the Library, and every other week will be on Teams. Students and Parents/ Guardians are welcome to attend these Spanish classes! (Any student attending is required to have a guardian with them.) Staff Spotlight
How did you end up teaching Mandarin at Marshall?
"Mr. Bustos asked me - If I could teach anything, what would I teach? I've been studying Mandarin for 28 years and thought it would be fun to teach a Mandarin class."
What has the student response been?
"Most seem to really enjoy it. There is rigor, but also fun. It is verbal language focused, but a lot of games and activities are incorporated."
What opportunities to students in your Mandarin class have?
"They get to Skype a native speaker who lives in China, as well as other conversational practice with native speakers; we eat dumplings at Thanksgiving; we recently sang a song at a celebration; they get a lot of chopstick practice; there will be a Chinese banquet; and we listen to podcasts so they can hear native speakers."
Is there anything else you would like people to know?
"I have been impressed by the students and how they have stepped up. One student overheard someone speaking Mandarin in public and was actually able to understand some of the conversation! Being able to speak Mandarin opens up opportunities. It is one of the fastest growing foreign languages in the world!"
