EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of November 6, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
First, I would like to remind everyone that we have made some important date changes to some of our upcoming events, so be sure to look at the calendar below. With that being said, welcome back to another week here at Fulton Science Academy.
Please be reminded that tomorrow is the last day to submit your talent show video!
We are coming back from a full weekend of wins from some of our academic teams and I want to take the beginning of this Newsletter to congratulate those teams before jumping into some other exciting information.
I want to begin by congratulating our Math Olympiad Junior Varsity and Varsity Teams on their wins at the North Fulton Math Tournament! Junior Varsity came in 2nd place as a team and Varsity came in 1st place! You can read more detailed information on these wins below. Second, I would like to congratulate our Model UN Team who won the Distinguished Delegation Award, as well as 14 individual Awards at the 36th Annual GA Southern Middle School Model UN Competition! Again, you can read more about these individual wins and see pictures from this competition below. Lastly, I would like to congratulate our Chess Team on their wins over the weekend! There is a more detailed article on this event below as well! It's always amazing to hear about and share in these achievements of our students and it also shows just how hard our coaches work to make these wins a reality! Thank you for all of the hard work you all put in! It never goes unnoticed!
We have our 3rd Annual S.T.E.A.M. Video Contest coming up on January 19, 2018! Please watch the video below for more details!
We have our first basketball game of the season this Wednesday at home against Mill Springs! I hope that everyone can come out and support our team on what will be an exciting season! This brings me to an exciting announcement! I am thrilled to announce our new Sideline Store! You can use this online store to purchase many different kinds of apparel and accessories from polos, to t-shirts, to caps, and back packs, etc. all FSA themed! The site allows the user to select the item, color, logo, and team whether it be academic or athletic; even different sayings! The possibilities are endless! There is everything from cotton shirts to Dri-Fit Nike or UA workout shirts! Any type of apparel you can think of, it has! I want to thank Coleson Randall, FSA's Athletic Director, on all of his hard work on bringing this site to fruition! Here are a couple pictures from the site, but be sure to check it out for yourself!
Now until November 18th, use the promo code TURKEYDAY and save 20% on all purchases of $80 or more!
We would like to encourage all of our families to apply for the State Tax Credit Scholarship program as it greatly benefits our students.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
For more detailed information, please use this link:
COMMUNITY SERVICE
As you are aware, we encourage our students to volunteer in and around their communities. We have already had many students participate in volunteering events in the area such as the Rivers Alive Clean-up Program. As students continue to participate in these kinds of volunteering events or on their own in their communities, please remember to log your hours. Mrs. Cantrell will be logging service hours for Middle School students and Mrs. Selvakumar will do the same for High School students. Please turn in any log sheets or artifacts to them. The requirement is 10 hours per semester. You can pick up a Volunteer Hours Sheet at the front desk and use it to log your hours each semester.
With Warmest Regards,
Kenan Sener,
Principal

There were over 400 students from 14 schools present. Despite this, FSAPS students made a tremendous showing, receiving 14 total awards, including three students named Outstanding Delegate for being the top performer in their respective councils.

science olympiad students visit UGA
Mrs. Butler’s Science Olympiad Herpetology students had a rare opportunity to visit the Natural History Museum at the University of Georgia in Athens to view live and preserved specimens of dozens of amphibians and reptiles. Adam Clause, a PhD student in Dr. Maerz’s herpetology lab, showed students how to distinguish between the various families of snakes, frogs, toads, turtles, and salamanders that they need to identify as part of their Science Olympiad competitions.
The museum is typically closed on weekends, but Adam made special arrangements for the team to meet there. In addition, he ordered the specimens the students needed to study from the off-campus UGA archives.
Students were grateful for this opportunity and thanks to Mrs. Butler for scheduling it and Mr. Bennion for volunteering to drive.

A Message from the Clinic
Here are some additional things you can do to prevent the spread of the flu and other illnesses:
- Teach children not to share personal items like drinks, food, eating utensils, or other personal items such as towels, combs, and brushes.
- Properly dispose of used tissues when coughing and sneezing, and use your elbow, arm, or sleeve instead of sneezing into your hand.
- Wash athletic practice clothing each day and shower after any contact sports.
- Stay home if you are sick, especially during the first days of the illness when the symptoms are the most severe and the infection is most contagious.
- Return to work or school only when symptoms are improving and when you've had no fever for at least 24 hours
- Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu.
Let's go to costa rica
Students must be 6th grade and up. If you are interested in knowing more about this program, please speak to Mrs. Carmona.
STEAM Team "Recyclables Turned to Art" Needs your Help!
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
As you know we are doing a course called STEAM for grades 6-11. Students have already submitted topics, team members, and they have received their steam teachers. Our 7th grade steam group: Aileen H. Sydney X. Ranjani V. Nina T. and Derek Z. need certain materials that are not easily accessible. We need donations of items like old toys, broken toys, used school materials, magazines, old books, small broken pieces of anything, small knick-knacks and trinkets that you do not want or need around your house. We also really need bottle caps. There are boxes in the Cafeteria and by the Front Desk where students can drop off their donations. They are at the entrance right where they walk in first thing in the morning before they are released to their lockers and right by the trophy cabinet in the Lobby. There are multiple boxes, each labeled by category. All students need to do is bring in their donation(s), drop it off in one of the bins and one of the students from our team will come by at the end of each week and collect the materials. Note that they don’t have to be a specific color, shape, or size. Anything that you would easily throw away you can donate. Thank you for your participation!
Vocabulary Bowl
The 2017-18 Vocabulary Bowl is starting soon. How will Fulton Science Academy rank in Georgia and in the nation? It’s up to your students.
What is the Vocabulary Bowl? It's a competition where students learn vocabulary and work together to propel their school to victory. Last year, over 38,800 schools participated and collectively mastered over 26.8 million words!
For more information of the Vocabulary Bowl Click here
