Shah Jahan had the Taj Mahal built for his favorite wife. Mumtaz Mahal was the one he loved the most out of three. She is the only wife that was buried in the Taj Mahal. How did Mumtaz Mahal die, you ask? She died giving birth to the couples 14th child. His grief led him to build the Taj Mahal.

After the construction of the Taj Mahal Jahan cut off the thumbs of the 20,000 workers, so there wouldn't be any replicas of the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan died in 1666 after being in imprisoned by his son for the last few years of his life because he couldn't pay back the all of his workers.

At the north end of the Mausoleum, flanked out on each side there are identical buildings. One is a mosque and the other is called a jawab, or duplicate. These are made of red sandstone with marble necked domes, with some surface decoration.
