The Glass Ceiling

Does it really exist for women?

Definition

The Glass Ceiling is the unseen yet unbreakable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising the corporate ladder. The metaphor explains how women can see how they can become more successful but invisible barriers are holding them back. In theory the glass ceiling should not exist because of the Women's Liberation Movement of the 1960s that opened many doors for women. Some people believe that women are given the same opportunities as men and work in some of the most prestigious positions. While some women do hold prestigious positions like CEO and prime minister, in comparison to the number of men who hold those positions is far less.
