What are the ABC's of ALICE?
Dear Parents & Guardians,
We recently informed you that we will be conducting our annual Fall ALICE Student Lessons at Carver Elementary. We have included some information on what exactly we mean by the ABC's of ALICE.
Alert: Get the word out using clear language and describe the location of the event.
Barricade and Lockdown: A good starting point - we will continue to lockdown students in secure areas by using methods such as barricading.
Communicate/Inform: Keeping staff and students updated and informed allows for good decision making.
Distract: If necessary, distract, confuse, and create distance.
Evacuate/Escape: If based on the Alert and Communication/Information, the best option is to Evacuate/Escape, staff and students are empowered to get out of the building to ensure students’ safety.
Please contact any of the administrators at school, if you have any questions.
Social Skill Lessons
We are excited as we continue our implementation of the Tiered System of Support for Social Emotional Learning. As part of this program, our teachers will be using a tool called the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment, or DESSA, which was developed by the Devereux Center for Resilient Children. This tool asks teachers to rate how often a student has demonstrated specific social and emotional skills in the past month.
The purpose of the DESSA is to identify which social and emotional skills your child has already learned and what skills he or she might still need to develop. The results of this tool will be used to provide students with social skill building and supports to help them engage in positive learning experiences. These lessons will be delivered by support staff members. Our goal is to ensure that your child is continuously developing the social and emotional skills that they need for lifelong success.
While the DESSA is just one component of our social and emotional learning program, we want to make sure that you are informed of our use of this instructional tool. We believe that the information gathered from the DESSA will be beneficial to your child’s overall success both inside and outside of the classroom. Parents/guardians of children who met the criteria for these lessons received notification letters this past week. Please reach out to any one of us if you have any questions.

School evacuation drills
Each year, we collaborate with our local police, fire and transportation department when we practice safety drills. In addition to the ALICE safety drills, we also regularly conduct fire and bus evacuation drills. We use these drills to help prepare students in the event of a real emergency, improve our practices and to keep open dialogue between teachers, parents/guardians, and the community. According to the research conducted by the National Association of School Psychologist, "school safety drills that practice best practices, can increase students' confidence and knowledge in an emergency situation, without causing undue anxiety or fear." We ask all our parents/guardians to partner with us by talking with your children regularly about the importance of drills.

Illuminate Thanksgiving - CES students and families meet at 4:30 at the intersection of Town Square and School Street. Everyone will be given a candle to hold as they walk in the procession of lights.
America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Celebration and Plymouth 400 Present: Illuminate Thanksgiving
This important annual event focuses on young people and their ability to be that “one small candle” making a difference in the lives of many. Taking place on the same day as the annual America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Parade, the program will kick off inside the National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse at Town Square with a presentation by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. Then we’ll move outside for a Procession of Lights down Leyden Street. The event will culminate on the Plymouth waterfront for main stage events, including performances by Northern Lights A Capella Chorus and Plymouth International Chorus.
