Quote of the Week

“The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.” ~ Thomas Babington Macaulay

Language to Eliminate

The following is an excerpt from an article I recently read. In the article, the author shares some language that educators should not use when discussing children. Reading the article was a great reminder for me as we engage in CLT, Intervention Team, IEP, and any other meetings that the language we use to discuss students is a portion of what shapes their reality. How we think drives what we do, and if we are thinking and saying students can't succeed, the things we do will mirror those sentiments.

Four Sentences Educators Must Stop Saying About Students

The language we use to talk about students matters. It reflects and shapes our perceptions, and most importantly, our expectations for student success. Sometimes the words we use to talk about students have biases within them we never intended. It’s easier to focus on our good intentions than to dig deeper into the implicit biases behind our words.

It’s time to change this—change our language together to reshape the relationship between schools and the students and families we serve.

BOYB - Brag On Your Buddy

Pearly and Ray are awarded "braggin' rights" by Lorie for the work that they accomplished over Spring Break. Lorie noted that this team of only two cleaned, buffed and waxed every hard floor (including the gym) and cleaned all of the old carpeting except for the Library. "Those guys were booking it. Being in two different schools and working breaks and summers and a lot of evenings, .... I see a lot and these two go above and beyond."

Thank you….Google Slides for being a great solution to the question, “Hey, what am I supposed to use on Google that’s like Publisher?”

Google Slides can be used like Microsoft Publisher. If you want a vertical document, you only need to go to File - Page setup and select “portrait” to turn the document vertically. Now you can insert text boxes and insert images much like you would on Microsoft Publisher. This is a great way to have students produce digital products through their Google accounts, such as digital articles. Below is a third grade example that a student just completed.
