QOHS Weekly Newsletter
September 19, 2021
Dear Quince Orchard Students, Staff, and Families,
This will be our first five day week of the school year and we have several meetings, events and information to share with you. We are utilizing a new platform to share our weekly newsletter and we are hopeful it is more user friendly for our community (translation is also available).
There are many time sensitive updates and important reminders that I want to bring to your attention. (Please read the entire section with specific details in the newsletter)
MAP-R Testing will take place Wednesday 9/23 and Thursday 9/24.
. Please review the modified bell schedule below.
Open lunch for 9th and 10th grade students is suspended indefinitely. Any 11th or 12th grade student leaving campus for lunch will be required to show identification. Students leaving the QO campus during open lunch are expected to:
Always showcase Cougar Pride and know that they represent QO in all settings.
Leave school grounds in a safe way utilizing the crosswalks. Safety is a priority and we can't control traffic but the crosswalks are there to support a safe transition.
Return to school prior to the start of 6th period (or at the end of the lunch block when schedules are changed) and must be in their next class on time.
Remain away from cars and do not enter cars. (Students cannot drive off campus)
This week we have our first PTSA meeting on Tuesday, September 21st at 7:00 pm and first Boosters Parent Meeting on Wednesday, September 22nd at 7:00 pm. Please see the links below to join these important meetings. Both meetings will be held virtually.
We will host a virtual meeting for the Class of 2022 Students and Families on Thursday, September 23rd at 7:00 pm. The link and meeting information is below.
Homecoming will be held on Saturday, October 2nd from 8:00-10:00 pm outside on the tennis courts. Tickets go on sale this week!
We take great pride in cheering for our student athletes and coaches. Please take a moment to read our spectator expectations. Students are expected to demonstrate Cougar Pride at all times. This includes NOT throwing things, “play-fighting”, pushing, running around, and/or making inappropriate comments. If a student is seen or heard doing something as noted above or engaging in appropriate behavior they will be asked to leave immediately.
Please read the information under each category heading carefully. We will continue to utilize a similar format to update you as we hear about any changes. And never forget…We can’t hide our Cougar Pride!
Make It a Great Day,
Elizabeth L. Thomas
Principal
New Info: Local and State Testing Information and Schedules
Testing at a glance for your information and understanding:
MAP
The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth in Math and Reading are standardized assessments that are administered to high school students grades 9 - 12. These diagnostic assessments determine students' present performance levels on math and literacy standards. The testing window is September 8th through October 8th. The test is computer-based for all students.
The MAP-R will be administered on Wednesday, September 22nd and Thursday, September 23rd; the MAP-M will be administered on Wednesday, September 29th and Thursday, September 30th. Due to MAP testing, students will follow modified schedules for the weeks of September 20th and the week of September 27th. These dates will allow the test administration to avoid conflicts with other school events as well as avoid test fatigue for students. The MAP Growth assessments are designed to be given in one test session, not over multiple days of testing.
Modifications will be made to the bell schedule during testing to accommodate testing on these dates. This will allow for continuity of instruction.
MCAP
Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) is an umbrella for annual statewide assessment for ELA/Literacy/Mathematics and Science. The English Language Arts (ELA) test is a computer-based and paper test (for designated students) which focuses on reading and understanding literature and informational text, as well as writing effectively when analyzing texts. The mathematics exam will focus on applying skills and concepts, understanding multi-step problems that require abstract reasoning and modeling real-world problems. The Science (MISA) will focus on the ability to demonstrate the essential knowledge and understanding of Science and Engineering.
The Science (MISA) which consists of one 60 minute section will be administered on Wednesday, October 7th. All students in grade 9 will complete the MISA 8 exam which they were not able to take during their eighth grade year. Students in grades 10 – 12 that are not in biology and have not previously taken the MISA will also test on this date.
The Mathematics (MCAP) exam which consists of two sections (Section 1: 20 minutes – non-calculator; Section 2: 45 minutes – calculator) will be administered on Tuesday, October 12th.
Students in grade 9 who took Algebra 1 last year in middle school will take the Algebra 1 exam.
Students in grade 9 that took Geometry last year in middle school will take the Geometry exam.
Students in grade 9 that took Algebra 2 in middle school will take the Algebra 2 exam.
All other ninth graders will take the Math Grade 8 exam.
Students in grades 10 – 12 that have “not taken” or “not met” Algebra 1 state requirements will take the Algebra 1 exam.
The English Language Arts (MCAP) exam which consists of two sections (Section 1 – 70 minutes; Section 2 – 70 minutes) will be administered on Thursday, October 14th and Friday, October 15th.
All students in grade 9 will take the ELA Grade 9 exam.
Students in grades 10 – 12 that have “not taken” the ELA 10 exam will take the exam on the aforementioned dates.
***Important Reminder: Students MUST use their MCPS issued device to complete these exams. If you are currently using your own device please pick up an MCPS Chromebook before Wednesday, September 22nd.

IMPORTANT 9/10 MCPS Athletics Update
Please see the MCPS Athletics Return to RAISE Update for Friday, September 17th HERE . Beginning Monday, Nov. 15, the start of the winter sports season, all high school and eligible middle school student-athletes will be required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination prior to participation. This requirement applies to the winter and spring sports seasons, as well as all out-of season activities conducted through MCPS Athletics
MCPS Community Update 9/9/21
Dear MCPS Community:
Here are seven things you need to know about from the Sept. 9, 2021, Board of Education meeting, including COVID-19 testing in schools, mandatory staff vaccination, and new student vaccination requirements for winter and spring sports.
Rapid COVID-19 testing will be used in all schools to minimize student quarantines. MCPS will receive rapid tests for every school beginning next week. The use of these tests, in conjunction with the other safety measures we have in place, will help keep more students in school. MCPS will receive further guidance from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) on the implementation of this rapid testing program and will provide additional information in the coming days.
The Board of Education passed a unanimous resolution requiring that all MCPS staff be vaccinated. The resolution requires that all staff employed by MCPS provide verification that they have received at least the first COVID-19 shot by Sept. 30, 2021, and verification of the second shot by Oct. 29, 2021, unless staff request an exemption based on a medical reason documented by a medical doctor. If a medical exemption is granted, the employee must submit to regular COVID-19 testing as required by MCPS. The Board passed this resolution as an added layer of protection, particularly for younger students who are not eligible to be vaccinated. A series of vaccination clinics hosted by MCPS, DHHS, and other healthcare providers will be conducted across the county.
COVID-19 opt-in nasal swab testing for grades PreK through Grade 6 begins Sept. 13. MCPS is continuing to reach out to families who have not yet completed the consent form for weekly COVID-19 testing. Phase 1 of the program will begin in more than 50 schools the week of Sept. 13. A random sample of asymptomatic students will be tested each week and individual test results will be available 24-36 hours after samples are collected. More information, including Frequently Asked Questions
Students must be vaccinated against COVID-19 to participate in winter and spring sports. Beginning Nov. 15, 2021, all students participating in the MCPS athletics program will be required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination prior to participation. Exemptions will be permitted if an authorized health care provider certifies that there is a medical reason not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. This requirement applies to the winter and spring sports seasons, but students who participate in fall sports are also strongly encouraged to be vaccinated. Vaccinations will allow activities to proceed with minimal disruption and support individual and team health and safety across MCPS Athletics. More information will be shared in the coming weeks regarding the submission of documents. Registration for winter sports will open in mid-October, and proof of vaccination must be submitted as part of the registration process.
MCPS continues to follow COVID-19 guidance from DHHS. MCPS follows COVID-19 guidance from DHHS, including guidelines for quarantining students with COVID-19 symptoms and their classmates who were in close contact with them. These guidelines were shared with the community on Sept. 3 and again on Sept. 8 with clarifying language provided by the Montgomery County Health Officer, in a letter to MCPS. In addition, DHHS has implemented a review on how administration of the guidance around quarantines is done to ensure it is universally applied, and they will continue working closely with MCPS staff to better identify close contacts that meet the CDC guidelines. For more clarifying information, visit this link
Instruction and support are provided to students in quarantine. Schools have implemented a variety of strategies to ensure instruction is not disrupted for students in quarantine. Elementary students receive live virtual instruction and support from teachers throughout the quarantine period. Secondary students have access to all instructional materials and participate in daily virtual check-ins for support with their teachers. Well-being teams in schools provide support and perform check-ins with students while they are learning virtually.
MCPS has developed a robust plan for hybrid learning. In the event that the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) mandates reduced capacity in school buildings, MCPS has a plan for hybrid learning. The plan incorporates staff input and an analysis of hybrid learning from last spring. It addresses specific strategies for students receiving special education services, information about technology supports, and grading and reporting policies, among other things. For more information, watch the Board of Education meeting here.

PSAT/SAT
Prior to PSAT or SAT administration on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 (7:45am), there is a two-part pre-administration session. First, to save time during the actual test administration, certain information about your child will be provided to the College Board (the provider of the PSAT and SAT), in advance of the testing date. This information covers basic information such as name, school, state, student ID, grade, gender, and date of birth. In addition, MCPS shares information with College Board regarding students who qualify for a fee waiver, which is utilized solely for that purpose and is not otherwise tracked or maintained by College Board.
Second, your child will have the opportunity to participate, with your consent, in the optional Student Data Questionnaire. The College Board gives students and families complete discretion regarding any voluntary information they provide as part of the Student Data Questionnaire. Information gathered is used for group reporting, for analysis to ensure that the exams are fair for all groups, to connect your child with potential colleges or scholarship opportunities, and for research. Read more about the Student Data Questionnaire on the second page.
To provide consent for your child to participate in the optional Student Data Questionnaire, you must return the signed consent form to the main office by October 1, 2021. Whether or not you consent for your child to participate in the optional Student Data Questionnaire, your child will still be able to participate in the PSAT or SAT School Day. Quince Orchard High School staff will be working with your student over the next several weeks to prepare for administration, and we will be communicating important details before test day. If you have any further questions, please contact Mrs. Edith Lee, assistant principal (Edith_u_lee@mcpsmd.org). Link ←Click here to see more information. Information about online payment will be available next week.
Important Reminder - Please Update Your Student Emergency Information
Please remember that any adult picking a student up from school must be on their emergency contact list. It is VERY important that the school has accurate contact & emergency information for each student. The process outlined below replaces the yellow cards that were traditionally sent home and MUST be completed by each family, as soon as possible.
Student Emergency Information should be updated through ParentVUE. Each year parents/guardians are required to complete the Annual Verification of Information through the Online Registration portal (in the right corner of your ParentVUE home screen). We highly recommend that you complete this as soon as possible. It is critically important that we have accurate parent contact information on file with the school and system as soon as possible.
Here are links to the ParentVUE Support Guide and directions for completing the annual verification of information.

Testing Accommodations for the College Board Tests (AP, SAT, PSAT)
In order to receive accommodations on these tests, a student must request the accommodations by submitting a Student Eligibility Form. The form must be completed by both parents and school officials and then mailed to the College Board at least seven weeks in advance of the student taking the first test.
The criteria established by the College Board for granting testing accommodations differs
significantly from those used by Montgomery County Public Schools. Students who have an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) or a 504 Plan are not guaranteed that the College Board will provide accommodations. The College Board requires current neuropsychological testing (within the past three years) which documents the specific need for each requested accommodation. Please contact Mr. Douglas Rivera in the Counseling Office (240-740-3620) in order to obtain the forms and to ask questions about this process.PTSA and Booster Club Information
Our PTSA and Boosters Organizations are key to our success. Linked here are the forms to join both the PTSA and Boosters. I urge you to support these worthy organizations which do so much to support our school and help us provide the best education possible to our students. You will find your involvement with one of our parent groups will help increase your student’s sense of belonging and pride in Quince Orchard High School.
