Daniel and Aly deal with hardships in our economics simulation!
Our Social Studies Economics Unit By: Alyssa Marx and Daniel Zepeda Ortega
What it is
In our social studies unit, we are learning about economy to prepare for the future. Our unit of economy is simulating ‘working’ at jobs, paying off student loans, car leasing, renting houses, and monthly bills. Just as we are simulating jobs and pay, we are also simulating hardships like not going to work because of recession, layoffs, natural disasters, and injuries/illnesses to keep it real. We are also having roommates to save money. Roommates are our partners. We split up our monthly bills; this is because in real life, we would most likely not have enough money straight out of college, and we are trying to be as realistic as we can. After the simulation, we make slides about all the information that we found out during the simulation..
Month One
In month one, we picked our jobs, our apartments, cars (or way of transportation), our roommates, our colleges, our meal plan, and many other needs. Once we pick them all, we did our math to calculate the monthly bills and then find our leftover income after we receive the median monthly starting salary for our career. We also created a rubric for our presentations we would present for the class. We discussed what would be below expectations, meeting, and above. Something we could do to get a 3 (above expectations) would be to explain how you felt about things, or create a story on how you and your roommate met. We also worked at our jobs and got paid for the first time in the simulation.
Month Two
In month two, we discovered our hardship. We had to figure out how to overcome our obstacles and see what would happen in real life if we had a problem. Some people lost their job, had natural disasters, or had health issues. If you went bankrupt, we looked at state regulations for getting a loan.
My hardship, was that in California, Hollywood, there was an earthquake near General Hospital’s studio. I only worked as a minor character, so they didn’t pay me. My roommate Claire Raymond, had to pay for it all. Fortunately, she had enough money and we saved enough to not go bankrupt.
- Alyssa
My hardship was that the new Playstation came out and it became so popular, Nintendo had to lay off on employees, one of them being me. Fortunately, my roommate Jaylen didn’t get laid off and he still works at Nintendo. I did more math and now I can rest easy knowing he can pay the bills.
-Daniel
Leah, Christian, and Wyatt enjoy the MATH SUPER CHALLENGE!!
Hi there! We are Nikita and Jaylen, and we will be talking about our math super teams where we work on new exciting math and discuss our answers.
We have teams of three. We are in teams based on our strengths from the data Ms. Gierman has collected from tests and classwork, and if one person is stuck, the others can help them out. The first team to finish the packet with all the questions correct gets 20 minutes of free time (school related and no computers during free time) and a piece of candy. 2nd will get 16 minutes of free time and it gets less and less.
This will also give us a break from computing as we got to explore math in the real world. We feel that this is a good opportunity to explore all the other branches in math because this is math from 4th to 7th grade all in one.
While 5th grade does MSTEP, 4th grade has lots of extra learning and bonding time!!
-Rohan-the winner on Wednesday!
