Fall Update
What's happening in Instructional Technology?
The Instructional Technology teachers are having fun getting to know the elementary students and the students seem to be enjoying their new special! The teachers are focused on creating and delivering a curriculum that follows the MA Digital Learning and Computer Science Standards (DLCS). This curriculum includes teacher-created lessons as well as lessons from Common Sense Education and Ellipsis Education. Grades K-2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Students in K-2 are learning the parts of the Chromebook with particular attention on the trackpad and the keyboard. In addition to gaining familiarity with the locations of the letter keys, students are practicing track pad skills including:
- click
- click/drag
- scroll
- open/close tabs
- navigating Google Classroom

K-2 DLCS Standards Focus Areas
Digital Tools [K-2.DTC.a]
1. Operate a variety of digital tools (e.g., open/close, find, save/print, navigate, use input/output devices).
2. Identify, locate, and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard (e.g., Space Bar, Shift, Delete).
Computing Devices [K-2CS.a]
1. Identify different kinds of computing devices in the classroom and other places (e.g., laptops, tablets, smart phones, desktops).
2. Identify visible components of computing devices (e.g., keyboard, screen, monitor, printer, pointing device).
4. Operate a variety of computing systems (e.g., turn on, use input/output devices such as a mouse, keyboard, or touch screen; find, navigate, launch a program).

Rings of Responsibility
Students in grades 3-5 reviewed the FPS Acceptable Use Policy which outlines the rules and responsibilities when using technology in school. They identified and shared personal experience with a broad range of computing devices. Students have also been learning about Digital Citizenship, Safety and Security. This unit will continue until November and will include topics such as:
- Staying safe in online communities
- Understanding in-person and online responsibilities
- Explaining how my behavior affects myself and others
- Evaulating and making healthy, balanced media choices
What’s Next?
- Defining what a password is and explaining its purpose
- Creating a memorable and strong password and explaining why this is important
- Identifying the reasons why people share information about themselves online
- Explaining the difference between private and personal information
- Explaining why we should not share private information online
- Defining the “curiosity gap” and how how “clickbait” gets your attention
- Sharing strategies to avoid “clickbait"'
NOTE: Students will also be using typing.com for a portion of
technology class. This is accessed through Clever and is available to
use for extra practice in classrooms as well.
3-5 DLCS Standards Focus Areas
1. Describe how to use proper ergonomics (e.g., body position, lighting, positioning of equipment, taking breaks) when using devices.
4. Explain the proper use and operation of security technologies (e.g., passwords, virus protection software, spam filters, popup blockers, cookies).
6. Identify different types of cyberbullying (e.g., harassment, flaming, excluding people, outing, and impersonation).
7. Explain that if you encounter cyberbullying or other inappropriate content, you should immediately tell a responsible adult (e.g., teacher, parent).
Ethics and Laws [3-5.CAS.b]
1. Demonstrate responsible use of computers, peripheral devices, and resources as outlined in school rules [Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)].
Computing Devices [3-5.CS.a]
1. Identify a broad range of computing devices (e.g., computers, smart phones, tablets, robots, etextiles) and appropriate uses for them.
