Mrs. Blankenship's News You Can Use
Week of February 1, 2016
Standardized Test Scores are in today's Friday Folder!
Curriculum Update
Curriculum Focus:
Reading- We will continue our work on citing evidence from two different sources. The students are expected to use phrases such as, “According to the text” and cite evidence in their writing. The paired passages summative test will be given Thursday and Friday. Also, the nightly expectation to read 30 minutes and record the title/pages read will continue until the end of the year. Students should record this information Monday-Thursday.
Grammar- The students will be using their Social Studies Weekly newspapers to identify various parts of speech. They will collaborate and compare their findings in their small groups. There is not formal grade next week.
Writing- The students will complete and share their work from the “Microbes” passage. The emphasis will be on providing constructive criticism to improve work. The formal grade on this skill will be given the week of February 8th.
G/L Roots- The root of the week is “duct.” The DG will be given Friday, February 5th.
Math- Next week in math, we will wrap up our study of the classification of two dimensional figures by their attributes (number of sides, length of sides, angle measures, and pairs of parallel sides). There will be a daily grade no later than Friday.
Science- In science, we will continue to explore the relationships between matter and mass as well as the different types of physical changes that can occur with matter. There will be a daily grade most likely on Thursday covering this content. Students have notes in their science notebook and there is a Quizlet set called Matter Matters that they can study.
Social Studies-In social studies, we will begin working on lesson three in chapter 7. This lesson covers the Great Depression and Roosevelt's New Deal. We will use our text book and the USA Weekly for weeks 11 and 12 to learn more about these topics. There are no graded assignments next week. However the following week there will be a daily grade based on the USA Weekly newspapers for weeks 11 and 12 and students can use the papers to aid with the daily grade. The test on Chapter 7 will be at the end of the week of the 8th.
