Nurse Notes:
Sight Savers Health Screening
Sight Savers Health Screening Program Recently, your student was given a form for the annual free school based comprehensive health screening known as Sight Savers America’s Health Screening program.
This form must be completed and returned to the nurse even if you do not want your child to
participate. Forms sent back with incomplete information may result in your child being screened as I have no way to identify those wishing to “opt out” of the screening without the student’s name.
If you have any questions at all, please contact me.
Thank you,

Alabama High School Athletics Association Bylaw Of The Week
AHSAA BYLAW OF THE WEEK GRADES 7-12
Scenario: Due to staff changes over the summer, ABC High School hired new softball coach for the upcoming school year. Because the coach was new, she used five days during the first week of October to evaluate her upcoming team. As the season progresses during the spring, she becomes curious of what talent is in the lower grade levels. So, to get a jump start on the next school year’s team, she begins working with the junior high administration and schedules May 20-24, 2019, to hold an evaluation for students in grades 7, 8, 9. Question: In accordance with AHSAA Bylaws, is this tryout permissible? Rule II, Section 16. Evaluation Period: Each school is permitted one Evaluation Period per sport during the off-season. All sports except football may have a maximum five days in a consecutive 10-school-day calendar period. Football is permitted a maximum 10 days in a consecutive 20-school day calendar period. The evaluations for spring sports can be held anytime during the first semester or anytime from the end of the season to the end of the school year and the evaluations for all other sports during the second semester. All students may participate in the evaluations. Note: Tryouts for any sport must be conducted only during an off-season Evaluation Period or after the first practice date for that sport. Ruling: ABC High School’s softball team held an evaluation period in the fall of the current school year. Therefore, whether there has been a coaching change or not, the team is unable to hold an evaluation period this spring. The new coach will have to wait until the next school season and decide if she wants to have one in the fall or the spring. Penalty: In this scenario, if the coach were to have two evaluation periods during the same school year, the school would be subject to a monetary fine and placed on probation for a period of one year. In addition, as restitution, the softball team would be subject to loss of practice time equal to the amounts of days of the tryout once official practice began in the spring. Proactive Measures: Ensure that coaches, of all sports, understand that each sport is limited to ONE evaluation period PER year outside the practice season of that sport, and tryouts are PROHIBITED during the summer. Tryouts for fall and winter sports are restricted to the spring semester, but spring sports’ tryouts can be either semester. The discretion is left up to the school and/or coach of that sport.
