WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
March is Women's History Month.
This month we are featuring Women of Monroe on the screen in the commons before school and during lunch. Thank you to Ms. Mains and the Monroe Historical Society for the pictures and information.
Grace Kirwin
Grace was born in Monroe in 1913. The family moved to Texas for a time but returned to Monroe 4 years later. Grace earned a degree in library science and in 1943 joined the U.S. Navy. She became a machinist mate third class and retired from the Navy reserves in 1970 as a lieutenant commander. In 1946, she moved back to Monroe with her husband, Gerald Kirwin. Grace worked and managed Milady’s Frock Shop. She served on the library board for 15 years and the city council for four years. In 1973 she was elected as Monroe’s mayor and served in that position until 1981. Grace served her community in many other ways.
Donnetta Walser
Donnetta grew up in Idaho and went to college there. She was a teacher for 28 years. She spent 27 of those teaching in Monroe. She was on the city council from 1976 to 1983 and from 1999 to 2002. Then she was elected to be the mayor of Monroe. She served our community in that position until 2009. She had other leadership positions on the civil service commission, Snohomish County’s League of Women Voters and the U.S. 2 Safety Coalition.
