The Ritenour Review

2016 - 2017 Third Grade Weekly News

The Genius In Me

This week we continued to work through our Genius Hour projects. This experience has not only been challenging for the students, but for me as well. Part of the philosophy surrounding Genius Hour involves the teacher stepping back and allowing students to take on their own learning and presentations. It has been difficult to watch students struggle but at the same time, I have seen so much learning occur through this process as well. Students have not only been challenged by researching such in-depth questions, but also by how to create a presentation that is meaningful to their audience. Students have created projects such as PowerPoints, games, Prezis, Sways, and models. All of these are wonderful tools students can use beyond this unit and apply to later learning. Stay tuned for pictures next week of presentations!

Next Week

Coming up next week:

Language Arts: We will be finishing up our Folktale Unit.

Math: We will continue to dig into our fractions unit, more specifically, equivalent fractions.

Word Study: We will be reviewing all of our word patterns we have learned so far this year. Students will not be taking a formal word study test.

Science: Students will be presenting their genius hour projects to the class.

Celebrating Mrs. Ritenour's Return

Although this is a bittersweet moment for me, I know all of the kids will be so excited to welcome Mrs. Ritenour back to the classroom when we all return from break in January. I know this will also be an adjustment for her as well so I would like to help ease that transition for her. If you would be willing, I am looking for donations (Keurig Coffees, Snacks, Little Items (winter?). I would love to be able to create a gift basket for her to welcome her back. Any donations you could make would be much appreciated.
