Florence Tree Commission Commemorative Tree Planting
The artwork below was created by Florence resident, Kurt Vetters, during the annual planting of the Florence Tree Commission commemorative tree. He presented the Urban Forestry Manager, Craig Thompson, with the original piece of art. Vetters emphasized, "His guys were out planting a tree in front of my house, and I gave them this as thanks." Mr. Vetters moved back to Florence from Greenfield, Indiana, in 2021.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
In the early days of Florence, the names for the streets in the downtown grid were carefully and thoughtfully chosen by the planners to befit a City that had been just as carefully and thoughtfully carved out of the frontier. So, most of the north-south streets were given the names of indigenous trees (with Court Seminary and Market [now Wood Avenue] as the exceptions), while most of the east-west streets received the names of rivers in Alabama [with College as an exception]. As streets opened up beyond the grid, however, street names were not so carefully or thoughtfully chosen. One, for example, was called Fish Trap Road because it ran roughly from the north end of Court Street all the way westward to a natural fish trap in Cypress Creek. Eventually, it was renamed Irvine Avenue in honor of the distinguished family in the magnificent home known as Hickory Place at 461 North Pine Street that produced two Mayors of the City, James Irvine, Sr. and James Irvine, Jr. and was connected through marriage to the Foster family who built the Courtview mansion. So, what’s in a name? “Not much,” many would answer. But most homeowners would rather share their street address with others as “Irvine Avenue” instead of “Fish Trap Road.” Agree?
