Update For Intermediate Families From Principal Gene Hoskins
Reminder For Parents Regarding May 4 Math Assessment and Days In May With No School
As we enter the last week in April, I want to thank our students for a great effort on the NYS ELA Assessment. Although we are still doing make-ups for any student who were unable to take the ELA Assessment this past week, we have our NYS Math Assessment coming quickly on May 4. In this weeks newsletter I am including some information regarding the NYS Math Assessment and also a reminder of some days in May when there is not school for students.
NYS Math Assessment on Tuesday, May 4:
Similar to the NYS ELA Assessment, NYS has also made significant changes to the NYS Math Assessments. New York State has reduced the length of the test significantly, using only a one-day multiple choice format for state accountability measures. The number of multiple choice questions is also being reduced as they remove the field test questions normally included. The extended response portion of the math assessment where they show their work (normally on Day 2) will be provided to school districts to be used at their discretion and only for internal review.
Parents of Virtual Students:
Just like the ELA Assessment, the one-day Math Assessment is a secure NYS test, which means it cannot be given anywhere but in school. We were so happy to so many of our virtual students come in and take the ELA Assessment last week. It was wonderful for students and staff members to get to see our virtual friends in person. Parents of our virtual students who want their child to take the Math Assessment on Tuesday, Math 4 will need to let the school know so that we can make arrangements for their child to take the assessment in school with the rest of our students.
Reminder of Days With No School in May:
Just a quick reminder of some days in the month of May that students do not have school:
- Friday, May 14 - Superintendent's Conference Day - no school for students
- Friday, May 28 - Note - this is a change to the District calendar. This is an additional day off that was added to Memorial Day weekend. No school for students or staff members.
- Monday, May 31 - Memorial Day - no school for students or staff members.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Bucenec or me if you have questions or concerns for your child. You can contact Mrs. Bucenec, Intermediate School Counselor, through email at mbucenec@soduscsd.org, me through email at ehoskins@soduscsd.org. As a follow-up on last week’s listening skills, particularly on giving feedback, and asking questions to clarify certain points or to understand here are two items to consider based on Brene Brown’s book “Dare to Lead."
First - Are you in the right headspace to give feedback? Note the picture below.
When you are looking for clarify here are some ways to consider asking for clarification:
I’m curious about…
Tell me more…
I’m wondering…
Help me understand…
Walk me through that…
Tell me why this doesn’t fit/work for you...
