A Work In Progress

By: Connor Franta

Genre

The genre of this book is nonfiction and it is a memoir.

Theme

Exploring his past with insight and humor, his present with humility, and his future with hope, Connor reveals his private struggles while providing heartfelt words of wisdom for young adults. His words will resonate with anyone coming of age in the digital era, but at the core is a timeless message for people of all ages: don't be afraid to be yourself and to go after what you truly want.

Protaganist and Antagonist

The protagonist of this book was Connor himself. He went through a lot of struggles, whether it was his home life, his struggles with identity, body image, or sexuality. He was able to overcome all of this and be happy for who he is and appreciate life more. His friends and family also play a big part in his life. They supported him through every decision and were there to help him in times of need.

The antagonist of this book was everyone that brought him down or the "haters". It is also his own conscience. His conscience would convince him that he wasn't good enough or he wasn't cool or good-looking enough. It made him have many doubts in himself.

Main Character

The main character is Connor Franta. Connor Franta is an Internet sensation and global trendsetter, with millions of followers on YouTube and many other social media platforms. Some of his weaknesses were his thoughts of himself and his thoughts of what others would think of him. His strength was his fans. They have been there through it all, to support and comfort him and help him overcome anything that made him worried or nervous.

Setting

The setting was his past and how much he has evolved from a small town boy from Wisconsin to a very well-known and loved Youtuber. As he has said "I'm just a small-town kid trying to figure out my place in the big, wide world. I've only been here for twenty-two years, and there's so much left for me to explore and learn."

Main Conflicts

As a child, he became overweight, leading his mother to sign him up for a YMCA swimming team. He ran cross country while attending La Crescent High School, where he graduated in 2011. He studied business at Saint John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota. In his second year, he added an arts minor, with an emphasis on films. As of 2015, he lives in Los Angeles, California.

On December 8, 2014, Franta publicly came out as gay in a YouTube video, stating he has accepted who he is and is “happy with that person”. He also spoke on the help he got from others on the Internet, and wanted to give people struggling with their sexuality similar advice. This six-minute long video, titled “Coming Out”, has over 7 million views and 700 thousand likes, being the second most viewed video on Connor's channel.

My Opinion

I personally loved this book. I have been watching Connor's videos for quite sometime now and I feel like I know him a lot better now, even if we haven't met. He was very truthful and passionate in his book. There was humor at some parts, and there were some more serious parts. The pictures definitely helped with imagining things and were so interesting to know that there was a story behind each picture.
