Restorative Justice happens in the classroom level and the office level, here is RJ Hack#1
Let's Talk- Use those words with Ss when they do not meet your classroom expectations.
In the past, I may have asked these types of questions.... What did you do? Or Why did you do that? What are you going to do differently next time?
Those questions do not provide the Ss a voice in the issue; they don't even ask why the Ss did what they did.
Do this instead...... Let's Talk....1. What happened? 2. What were you thinking about when ________ happened? 3. Who did this affect, and how so?
"By saying "Let's Talk" and asking questions, we demonstrate that this meeting is not a punishment; it's a conversation." (Hacking School Discipline p 16) this approach is more likely but not guaranteed to reduce the chance of having a repeat offender.
