The end of marking period 1 is November 4th. A reminder that there is no school for students next Monday, October 24th.
As a reminder, students and families seeking mental health resources and support for grief and loss can reach out to their School Counselor or administrator. Students may be connected to a variety of supports, both inside and outside of school. This year, we are happy to have additional wellbeing supports available at Northwest, including services offered by a School Social Worker and the staff from our new Bridge to Wellness Center. Assistance for a crisis is available 24-7 through the Montgomery County Crisis Center and also by calling/texting 988 for the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. In addition, mental resources can be found on the MCPS website.

NEW: Things you need to know from MCPS for Thursday, October 13
Here are eight things to know for Thursday, Oct. 13. They include information about bus safety, what happens when a bus route is delayed or canceled, an update on the Athletics Safety Plan, student progress reports, tutoring, SSL opportunities and more.
Next Week is National School Bus Safety Week
The week of Oct. 17–21 is National School Bus Safety Week. School bus transportation is more than a ride to and from school—it also is a means to equitable access to education. School bus transportation plays a critical role in the education of our nation's students and is the direct link between a neighborhood and the classroom. More than 25 million children ride the yellow bus every school day nationwide, and National School Bus Safety Week serves as a reminder for students, parents, teachers and the community to be safe while on the bus, near the bus and while waiting for the bus. Families and school communities are encouraged to give thank you notes, make signs and show your appreciation in different ways to your bus operators.
School Bus Safety TipsWhat Happens When My Bus Is Delayed or Canceled There is a local and national challenge with recruiting, hiring and retaining bus drivers for school systems and the transportation industry. When a bus driver or attendant is unable to come to work due to illness or unexpected leave, it puts a strain on the system to keep that bus on the road. The MCPS Department of Transportation uses substitute drivers and multiple runs to ensure that it has as many buses as possible on the roads to deliver students to school every day. Canceling a bus route is a last resort.
If your child’s route is delayed or canceled, here is how we let you know:
Impacted routes are published the day before or the morning of by 6:15 a.m.
Information published on MCPS website and ConnectEd message is sent to families
Department of Transportation continues to identify possible drivers for impacted route
Bus route information dashboard updated every half hour until 9:30 a.m.
Updates for afternoon routes
Bus route information dashboard updated by 1:30 p.m.
Principals and MCPS leadership are also notified of any route disruptions.
See the Bus Route Information Dashboard.MCPS Antiracist Audit Released
The Board of Education received a public presentation of the MCPS Antiracist Audit by independent auditors, Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium, Inc. on Oct. 11. The report confirmed that MCPS has many elements needed to eliminate racial disparities for students, families and staff, however the study calls on MCPS to develop a clear, systemwide comprehensive approach to achieve an antiracist school system. The audit identifies a series of recommendations; to read these recommendations see the full Antiracist Audit linked below.Athletics Safety Plan
The MCPS Athletics Safety Plan will continue to drive program operations. Varsity football games will continue in Tier 1 at this time, while actions from Tier 2 may be implemented at individual games. The decision guidelines for each tier are outlined in the safety plan. For other sports, local schools may make appropriate accommodations to the default Tier 1 restrictions, such as modifying admission procedures (verification of enrollment and/or halftime entry). MCPS continues to assess the impact of the actions across the entire program and will provide updates when modifications are made.Interim Progress Reports for Marking Period 1 Released Today
The interim progress reports for the first marking period will be distributed to K-12 students and their parents today. For students and parents with ParentVUE accounts, the report will be found in the documents section within ParentVUE and StudentVUE. For parents of students who do not have ParentVUE accounts, these documents will be mailed home and should arrive over the next few days. Questions regarding these documents should be directed to your child’s school. Log in or learn more about ParentVUE here.Free Tutoring Available to All MCPS Students
There are several free tutoring options available to MCPS students. FEV Tutor and Tutor Me Education offer free, virtual tutoring. By logging into their Clever accounts, students can join a tutoring session. Both companies offer the same two services: On-demand homework help that require no scheduling and scheduled, ongoing tutoring for longer term support.FEV Tutor

Earn SSL Hours by Supporting Emancipation Day in Maryland
Emancipation Day in Maryland is celebrated annually on Nov. 1 to commemorate Nov. 1, 1864, the date Maryland abolished slavery in its constitution through an amendment that was voted on by the public. Maryland was the first state to end slavery by a popular vote. MCPS encourages students and families to visit local Emancipation Day celebrations at Button Farm Living History Center on October 29, 2022, from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. and Sandy Spring Slave Museum on Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Students can earn Student Service Learning hours for attending. REMINDER: Holiday Giving Project of Montgomery County
Each year the Holiday Giving Project of Montgomery County provides food at Thanksgiving and food and gifts for the December holidays to low-income households. The Holiday Giving Project Coalition coordinates this seasonal program in conjunction with a variety of religious, business and nonprofit organizations. Families can be referred by School Counselors. All Northwest students will receive a paper copy of the Holiday Giving Consent Form to bring home this week in their 2nd period class. If you are interested in receiving these services, completed forms should be submitted to the Northwest Counseling Office by Friday, October 21, 2022 to meet the Thanksgiving deadline. While a referral is not a guarantee of assistance, the Project helps as many families in need as donations allow. Please contact your student’s School Counselor if you have any questions.
REMINDER: Election Day Service Opportunities
The Montgomery County Board of Elections is seeking school-age students, to serve as Election Day student aides. Its main goal is to increase civic participation and knowledge of the political process. Serving as a student election aide gives students their first exposure to the actual logistics of the democratic process in the United States. Students leave the program with experience in how elections are set up and a greater understanding of and trust in American democracy. Student election aides are not offered any monetary compensation, but they are given Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for every hour they work.

REMINDER: Enhanced Safety Measures underway at MCPS Athletic Events
MCPS Athletics Safety Plan
Dear MCPS Community,
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will implement a number of enhanced security measures at athletic events beginning this Friday, Sept. 23.
The move comes after an instance of unacceptable and abhorrent behavior during a recent varsity football game, including the inexcusable off-field altercations during the Sept. 16 matchup between Northwest and Gaithersburg high schools.
MCPS is committed to the safety and security of students, families and community members who want to enjoy various athletic contests, and will not tolerate the indefensible and violent behavior and actions that have occurred in the opening weeks of this fall season.
To ensure the safety of all spectators and game participants, beginning Sept. 23, the following tiered actions will go into effect at all high school games:
- Students of the participating schools will be allowed to attend with a valid ticket and with their student ID or Synergy verification of their schedule. All other school-aged spectators must be accompanied by an adult chaperone—this includes all elementary and middle school students and high school students from other schools. Adult chaperones must stay and supervise students for the duration of their stay at the game. Spectators are asked to be patient at the gate, as admission may take additional time.
- Students and spectators must sit in the stands during the game. While there will be potential gatherings at halftime and postgame, large gatherings will not be allowed during the game.
- There will be no re-entry and spectators will not be admitted after halftime.
- Backpacks will not be allowed.
- Only student-athletes, coaches, game officials, athletic department staff, and credentialed personnel and media are permitted on the sidelines.
- Event security personnel will use separate entrances, staggered exits and additional support in high-traffic areas.
- Inappropriate and unruly behavior may result in suspension from subsequent MCPS athletic activities.
These changes will be in effect for all high school athletic events for the remainder of the season.
Should other incidents occur, other tiered security interventions will be implemented. These could include spectator capacity limitations and game time/date adjustments. Additional actions will be based on the following criteria or guidelines:
- Level of anticipated spectator attendance.
- Historical rivalries between schools.
- Historical occurrence of incidents, including this year and previous years.
Facility layout, including lighting, spectator seating and parking lot layout.
- Incidents in the community that may impact school and athletic event operations, which will be communicated through a collaborative process with police partners.
Any teams that engage in severe or inappropriate behaviors may be excluded from postseason competition or suspended for multiple games.
