NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Term 3 Week 6 : 27 August 2020
Loving God, you chose Catherine McAuley for the service of your people
who are poor, sick and uneducated.
You inspired her to found the Sisters of Mercy that these good works might endure.
Give to each of us a portion of her compassionate spirit and ardent desire
to serve your suffering people.
Bless all our undertakings and grant that union and charity may always thrive among us.
Graciously hear our prayer for Catherine,
and by granting the favours we ask through her intercession,
hasten the day when her sanctity will be celebrated by all the church.
Catherine McAuley prayer for Beatification
Dear Parents and Staff
Can you believe it, we’re at the end of August? In one sense it feels like such a short time ago that we started the school year but, in many ways, during this very different year, it also feels like an eternity. At school we’re constantly looking for ways to keep all of our regular events going and I have shared a few of these in my articles in today’s newsletter.
ASSEMBLIES
This morning we were treated to a wonderful Assembly by the Year 1M class where they taught us all about the environment. Did you know that there are three different categories of environments: Natural, Constructed and Managed? The children are all very clever and learning so much all of the time.
Tomorrow I’m looking forward to being entertained by the Year 4M class. I wonder what new things I will learn from them.
AUSSIE OF THE MONTH
Each month two children, one from the Junior grades and one from the Upper, are identified by staff as worthy recipients of this award. In previous years these would have been presented at either a Monday or Friday Assembly. As both of these Assemblies are now presented electronically to most of the classes, we have decided to have a special occasion where all of the classes assemble outside each of their rooms and focus on the Mother Mary Piazza where the presentation to the Aussie of the month recipients will be made. The first of these will be held next Monday morning at 9.00am
ANGELICO ART EXHIBITION
For the past 27 years an Exhibition of Catholic Secondary students’ artwork has been held in Perth city. For the past 4 years Catholic Primary students have had their work included in the Exhibition. For the first time, this year, Notre Dame has entered students’ artwork. As it was not possible to hold the physical Exhibition this year, a 3D electronic Virtual Tour has been developed and this will be shared with all Catholic school communities in the next week or so. When it is available to view, I encourage you to explore the depth of talent on display, including the wonderful works by the following Notre Dame students.
All of these artworks are on display in the school office and will be moved to the Library next week so that all of the children will be able to view them.
MOTHERS’ DAY, FATHERS’ DAY & GRANDPARENTS’ DAY
As there either hasn’t or won’t be an opportunity to celebrate any of these events with a breakfast or morning tea this year, we will be providing a free hamburger for all Mums, Dads and Grandparents who attend our Athletics Carnival during the first week of next Term on 15 October. Whilst a little lower keyed that the regular events we hope this helps to make you aware of just how grateful we are for all of your support. A flyer will be sent home next week for you to let us know if you will be attending the Carnival so that we may cater appropriately.
CONFIRMATION RETREAT
In a letter to Year Six parents on 21 August I advised that it is highly unlikely that the Sacrament of Confirmation would be held on the proposed date of 12 September. Whilst this is still the case, we are continuing with the students’ preparation with their Retreat Day next Wednesday, 2 September. I look forward to a great day of preparation for the children and the possibility of them being able to receive the Sacrament before the end of the year. Please keep them, their parents and their Teachers in your prayers.
MERCY DAY
Catherine McAuley was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1778. In 1824 she used her inheritance from an Irish couple she had served for twenty years to build a large House of Mercy where she and other lay women would shelter homeless women, reach out to the sick and dying and educate poor girls. The House on Baggot Street opened in 1827. To give these efforts greater stability, Catherine and her co-workers founded a new religious congregation. On 12 December 1831, she and two others professed their vows as the first Sisters of Mercy. Before her death on 11 November 1841, Catherine founded convents and works of mercy throughout Ireland and England.
Earlier this year we purchased a beautiful tea set, part of which is on display in the cabinet in the school office. This is because when Catherine McAuley was dying, many of the sisters gathered around her bedside to say good-bye and to pray the prayers for the dying. Not long before she died, at the end of a long day of waiting, she said to one of the sisters: “Be sure you have a comfortable cup of tea for them when I am gone.” Ever since, the comfortable cup of tea has been a symbol of the warm and caring relationships which were at the heart of Catherine McAuley’s Mercy vision.
On Mercy Day, Friday 4 September, the children are invited to:
- Wear free dress.
- Have an icy pole treat for morning tea.
- Have a sausage sizzle and a juice box for lunch
- Participate in a Liturgy of the Word in their Year level.
- Participate in a range of activities within their class about Catherine McAuley, the Mercy Order and our school traditions.
- Participate in a mini fete involving a range of games and activities.
- Enjoy time in the afternoon in a sharing activity with their buddy class.
Children are asked to bring a $5.00 donation which will cover all activities for the day. This will be passed on to the Sisters to assist with their Mercy Works for the needy.
FIELD EVENTS CARNIVAL
I’m looking forward to watching the Year Three to Six children when they compete in the Senior Field Events faction Carnival next Thursday at Ern Clark Athletics Centre, Wharf St Cannington.
PARKING
I was invited to a meeting this morning co-ordinated by one of our school neighbours to discuss the ongoing parking issues around our school. It was a very productive meeting and we will be exploring some options and possible initiative which may alleviate some of our problems. I will keep everyone informed as these develop further. In the interim, I again ask that parents do not park in the streets surrounding the school to drop or collect children as this is a very dangerous practice.
SACRAMENTAL DATES
Information regarding the Sacrament of Confirmation was sent home to parents. Please ensure you read this information thoroughly as there are some important dates that are included.

3 YEAR OLD KINDY CLASS NEWS
Wow what a term it has been so far in 3-Year-Old Kindy. We have had four new friends start this term. We also welcomed Mrs Addy who has joined our classroom.
Our main topic has been exploring Mini Beast (bugs, insects). We have been very lucky to share with Kindy P their silkworms. We have loved watching them grow and change. Each week we have looked at them and noticed them eating and how they have grown. We have to be careful now because they have started making their cocoons and spinning silk.
Numeracy
This term we have been looking at the numbers one to five. We have been looking at the numbers and then recognising how many in a group up to five. Our teachers thinks we are very clever doing this.
The last few weeks we have started looking at shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle and square). We had a challenge at home this week to find circles at home. We have done an awesome job at this and we are going to make our own shape book.
Language
We have had lots of learning intentions this term in Literacy. One of the intentions is recognising the first letter of our first name. We have completed a number of activities to assist us learn the correct formation of this letter. We trace over foam letters and then we have written the letter in salt and made it with playdough.
We have also had fun learning to break up words into syllables, for example banana (ba- na – na). Our teachers are so amazed at how well we are doing this. This will help us when we start reading (down the track).
We have started working on making our Dads something special for Father’s Day. We are excited to give them this present and wish them a Happy Father’s Day.

SPORTS NEWS
SMG Friendlies
Many thanks to SMG for allowing our Year 6 group to participate in some friendly fixtures this term. It was great to have our first official games against the school and we look forward to a bit more friendly rivalry over the next few years. Notre Dame provided another good showing in all sports and some fantastic skill was on show from both schools. Many thanks to Mrs Lawrie, Miss Fimmano, Mrs Flexman, Mrs Loiacono, Mr Fimmano, Griffen and the many parent helpers during both SMG games. It was greatly appreciated by everyone involved.

EARLY YEARS LEARNING FRAMEWORK
Belonging, Being and Becoming – the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) describes the principles, practises and outcomes that support and enhance young children’s learning from birth to five years of age, as well as their transition to school.
The framework is a key component of the National Quality Framework for early childhood education and care. The EYLF was developed by the Australian and state and territory governments with input from the early childhood sector and early childhood academics.
The framework offers a vision where 'all children experience learning that is engaging and builds success for life.
(Sourced from https://www.education.gov.au/early-years-learning-framework-0 )
Each week we will feature one of these principles, practises or outcomes in the newsletter.
We have looked at ‘Belonging’ and ‘Learning is Everywhere’.
This week we are looking at ‘Becoming’.
