Somerset Elementary Summer Update

Week of July 21st

Classroom placement letters will be mailed on Monday, August 16th. Our teachers work together to choose the best match for each student based on what they know about relationship dynamics and learning needs. Because of this, we are unable to take family requests for specific teachers. However, we always carefully consider your feedback and input as we develop class lists so feel free to leave a message at (207)938-4770 or email me at Please know that no placement changes will be made once the letters go out on the 16th.

Next year, we will be back to "in person instruction" FIVE days each week. All students are expected to return to school full time. If your child will continue to require the remote learning option due to an individual or family medical situation, please contact the principal as soon as possible by leaving a message at (207)938-4770 or by emailing Ellen Surprenant at

Somerset Elementary is planning an "Open House" to greet families and students on August 31st. At this time, we are not sure what the guidelines will be for guest access in the building. We are cautiously planning a 5:30-6:30pm event and ask that you "Save the Date" until further notice.

As the summer progresses, the Maine Department of Education will be updating guidelines for schools, and we will keep you informed of requirements as school gets ready to open.

All you need to attend Somerset Elementary School is a SMILE!

There are no class or teacher lists of supplies that need to be purchased ahead of time for students. Throughout the year, teachers may ask for volunteers or various items for special projects that you may want to help out with.

We provide each student with an individual pencil box and the tools and supplies they need. We do suggest that each student be prepared with the following:

  • a backpack
  • a water bottle
  • a pair of sneakers

If you need assistance acquiring any of the above items, or would like to donate these items, please contact the school and leave a message at (207)938-4770

Digging Back to the Dinosaur Days

Kids loved learning about these humongous carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores of long ago. Their learning included rich discussion, reading, writing, drawing, math games, and hands-on science. Students were able to create multiple artistic dinosaur pieces including a pasta dinosaur.

Let’s Be An Engineer

All students were able to collaborate, think critically, and solve problems while designing, creating, and testing models such as multi-level house structures, bridges, and water drainage systems. Kids were engaged, focused, and excited during these hands-on learning experiences provided by the .

Music Mondays

Every Monday, students participated in music classes as part of their rotation. Mr. Stecher, on loan from SVES, worked with students on musical skills and activities including singing, listening, echoing, moving to music. and drumming.

Big picture

Childcare Opportunity

The St Albans Community Center (formerly the St Albans Consolidated School) has the opportunity to bring a "Before", "After", and "Out of School Time" program to the community. We need to gauge interest to determine the potential viability. If you, or someone you know may be interested, please contact the community center at (207) 341-0395 or send a private message to the St Albans Community Center Facebook. We are thrilled to hear of this potential support for families in need of morning and afternoon care.
