January 12, 2018
Hello Holland Elementary Families,
Despite the weather issues a few days ago, we had a fantastic week at school. The children seemed to love getting outside as the temperatures increased and the snow melted. We even had a fire drill today that went very well. We seem to be back in routines for effective teaching and learning, and I hope that it stays that way!

Book Bowl
The “Book Bowl” will take place again this year. What is it? It‘s a fun way to celebrate reading!
How does it work? Each elementary school can enter teams of students in grades 2, 3 and 4, to read up to twenty-five books (from an established list) and then demonstrate their knowledge of the books in a fun celebration of reading. Students do not have to read all twenty-five books.
Students will be part of a team of 5-8 students and will meet once a week over a 3-month period to discuss the books on Wednesday mornings at 8:30 AM.
On March 13, 2018 all schools’ teams will meet to answer questions about the books.
The celebration of reading will take place at Council Rock High School South from 6-8pm.

Hour of Code
Students in grades 2-6 have spent the last two weeks coding using the Hour of Code program. They are learning a great deal, and it is wonderful to see what a collaborative learning experience this is for the students. They are eager to share with one another as they learn how to navigate through the coding.
Hour of Code is a web-based program that students can use anywhere. As long as they can access the Internet, they can access Code.org.
For students to utilize the site they should:
- Go to the HES Library Webpage.
- Click on the Hour of Code link.
- Click on their teacher’s name.
- Click on their own name.
- Enter their password. Students in grades 3-6 have a randomly generated two-word password. Students in second grade have a picture. All passwords were randomly generated by Code.org.
All students received their password in Library. If you would like your child to work on the Hour of Code program from home and he/she cannot remember the password please e-mail hadams@crsd.org and Mrs. Adams will help you.
The Great Toy Room Cleanout
Currently at HES, more than ever, we are striving to incorporate STEM activities across the curriculum. We are looking for ways to help children to design, create, and explore. Holland Elementary would like some of your old toys: Legos, Lincoln Logs, Magna Tiles, K’nex Kits, Castle Logix, building blocks, and anything else low tech or no tech.
We are not asking for entire sets - just a handful of extras you have to spare. If each student would provide a small amount it would add up to ample opportunities to enhance our students’ learning. Donated items will be sorted into bins and housed in our school’s science lab for teachers to use with their classes. Thanks so much for helping us with this project!
PTO Tricky Tray
For those who may be new to the district and or the school, below is information about the Holland PTO's Tricky Tray event. This is one of the PTO's biggest fundraising event of the year. It will take place on February 23rd, and 24th. All proceeds go to the Holland PTO and are used to service the school and our students. Last year’s proceeds from this event enabled us to buy 60 new chrome books, 2 charging stations and so much more.
- Tricky Tray is a silent raffle auction that takes place in the gym of the school. Parents and the local community donate gift certificates, money, and specific items to be raffled off on February 23rd and 24th.
- Tickets may be purchased during a pre-sale online and at the event. Ticket pricing and purchasing details to come.
- There will also be an option to purchase 50/50 raffle tickets as well as premium tickets for premium trays.
- The Tricky Tray committee will provide all families with a tray, and families may choose to donate.
- You do not need to be present at the calling of the winners to win your tray.
- This success of this event is reliant on the school community and volunteers. A sign up genius will be going out to the school community as we get closer to the event.
- Specific dates, ticket prices, tray delivery, drop off dates, and event times will be coming home with your children, sent in email form, displayed online, and on the HES Facebook page in the weeks to come.
