Avonworth School District News
February 2023
Avonworth's Night at the Museum
The theme for the evening was "Civil Rights - Overcoming Adversity" and students delivered presentations on both historical and contemporary topics. Students also created and shared artwork with an audience that included family, friends, teachers, school administration, and other invited guests.
With the help of History Center docents, students developed and practiced a presentation that informed audiences about local and national examples of people and groups that faced adversity in the U.S. The 8th grade class would like to thank the History Center staff as well as guests from Teen Screen who helped to make this event a success.

Inspired Art
APC artists in 1st grade enjoyed working with a resident artist this month.
Students were learning how to create movement in their artwork, just like the movement they hear when the artist, Saihou, plays the drum!
Students had a great time working with the artist, learning new art techniques, and creating more artwork!
The Beattie Road Show
The "Beattie Road Show" visited Avonworth in early February!
Students in the 8th grade spent the day learning about programs offered at A.W. Beattie Career Center.
Students rotated through 5 programs: Emergency Response, Cosmetology, Health & Nursing Sciences, and Sports Medicine, and heard a talk about Aero Engineering and Drone Piloting.
Learning Career Readiness
The 5th grade has been investigating Career Readiness as well as Financial Literacy.
In February, students had the opportunity to connect with 14 community members through a Career Conference. Each speaker shared their career with the students, as well as their strengths and interests that lead them to this career choice.
Students had the chance to ask questions and make connections to their own strengths and interests. It was a rewarding morning for not only the students but our guest speakers as well.
College Fair Visit
More than 90 juniors visited the Pittsburgh NACAC College Fair at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
Hundreds of post-secondary schools were in attendance. The annual college fair is an excellent opportunity for juniors to begin their planning for post-secondary education and to speak with the admissions representatives at the schools.

Chinese New Year Celebrations
In celebration of the Chinese New Year at the end of January, Avonworth's Chinese language class went to the University of Pittsburgh to visit the East Asian Library. The class also went to Hokkaido Seafood Buffet to eat Chinese food to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Based on Chinese culture, the year 2023, which begins on January 22, 2023, and ends on February 9, 2024, is known as the year of the water rabbit.
Fun fact: if you were born in 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951, and 1939, then you will be the rabbit!
According to Chinese astrology, Rabbits are predicted to be gentle, quiet, elegant, and alert as well as quick, skillful, kind, patient, and very responsible, sometimes reluctant to reveal their minds to others and have a tendency to escape reality, but always faithful to those around them.
