Counselor Connection
October/November Newsletter
We almost made it through October! The time is flying! The staff and students are in the swing of things and are ready to build momentum as the school year takes off.
This month has been a busy one so far! I have gone into the classrooms to introduce myself and to share about the services offered through the counseling department. I will begin meeting with students who have expressed an interest in joining a small counseling group throughout the next few weeks. Groups last anywhere from 6-8 weeks and will cover topics such as stress management, family changes, organization, effective communication, and friendship. Please reach out if you think your child will benefit from being a part of a group.
From October 5th-October 9th our school observed the Week of Respect in which the Kidsbridge organization planned different activities to promote respect, kindness, and positive morale throughout the building. Students were encouraged to dress up to celebrate different themes and shared positive affirmations with each other. The energy throughout the building was awesome!
There are a number of National initiatives that take place during October as it is Bullying Prevention Month. Ask your students what they have learned so far!
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns!
Warmly,
Amanda Fertig
Grade 7 Counselor
Kidsbridge
Kidsbridge is a group of 8th grade students who focus on bullying prevention activities throughout the year. In September, we went on a retreat to the Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum in Ewing and the students started to brainstorm their mission for the 2015-2016 school year. One of the main topics that came out of this is making Timberlane a safe place for students who identify as LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender). Stay tuned for information on how our students are going to combat this sensitive issue.
In the Spring, your 7th graders will have the ability to apply to be a part of Kidsbridge!!
Got Assets?
Research by Search Institute has identified 40 concrete, positive experiences and qualities – “developmental assets” – that have proven to have a tremendous influence on the lives of young people.
Asset #1- Family support: Family life provides high levels of love and support.
How can you apply this?
- Start family traditions such as game nights, seasonal outings, or family gatherings.
- Give kids space and privacy when they need it.
- Give your kid a hug today even if they are older!!
- Spend time with each of your teens individually.
- Make a memory box with each of your children
