Building a Love of Reading
This year Loma Heights staff and students will be focusing on building a culture and love of reading for all. According to an article in Global Educational and Solutions, "Research results find that reading increases our understanding of our own identity, improves empathy and gives us insight into a world view of others". We know that books open up the world for our students. To jump start this school-wide initiative we have a purchased a book vending machine. Students will have the opportunity to earn a free book for every completed reading log they turn in. Students read 15-20 minutes per day. They write down the title of the book and parents will sign. Student will then turn in their complete reading log, front and back, to their teacher to receive a special book token which students can use to select a book of their choice from the vending machine. We are so excited to begin this very important initiative. We would like to invite everyone to a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday 10/16 at 5:00 pm.
Block Party
We are excited to announce that this coming Monday our partners, Wings of Life, will be hosting a a block party. This is the same amazing group that plan, prep and facilitate our Monday night dinner and parent classes. You are all invited to bring out the whole family for some food, music and activities from 5:30-8:00 pm at the Loma Heights cafeteria parking lot. Before the block party we will have our ribbon cutting ceremony of the book vending machine at 5:00 pm. We hope to see everyone there!
Graduate Profile
This months graduate profile key element is being SELF-AWARE. This month students will vote on a school community service project to practice self- awareness. We will be sending out all the details once the students have decided.
Self-awareness is seeing that there is problem or an opportunity for improvement in our community and together problem-solving to find a solution to a challenge or question we have. It’s trying different things and not giving up until you find the answer or solution.
Cold Weather
It is that time of year again where we are still having hot or warm days but cool mornings. Please make sure to check the weather and dress students in layers. If you can also speak to your child / children about being responsible for their sweaters and jackets. Many student take off their jackets or sweaters during recess and PE but forget to bring them in. If you are missing one of your child's jackets, please visit our lost and found in front of the cafeteria. Just sign in the front office.
