NWEA Update

I apologize for any confusion regarding the NWEA last week! I knew the 5th grade would be testing soon, but I didn't realize it would be the week we returned from break. Due to the change in schedule to accommodate the testing sessions, our reading and math schedules were pushed back a bit. Make-ups will take place on Wednesday, January 13th.

Last week, your students took:

-A language usage test

-A mathematics test

-A reading test

Quick refresher on what the NWEA is:

The NWEA is the new test that Addams students take three times per year to monitor growth as well as detect areas of weakness. All students in grades 2-5 are responsible for taking these tests. With the Fall and Winter sessions out of the way, we only have one more round of NWEA testing in the Spring.

What's New in Math?

Skills we will work on this week include:

-Multiplying whole numbers and decimals

-Multiplying decimals by decimals

-Comparing decimal shift patterns

-Estimating products

-Multiplication practice

Remember to look for corrected homework in Friday Folders! I will be correcting about 3-5 questions on each homework assignment in order to provide you and your child with feedback on how they are doing with each concept.

**Please remember that topics are subject to change depending on the pace at which we master each new concept.

Wrapping up "Wonder" and partnership books in Reading

As we reflect on "Wonder", students will be wrapping up their own partnership books. To demonstrate their understanding of the work we've done with main characters, your child is starting to create a project to showcase their understanding of the main character in one of their partnership books. This project will be worked on mostly during class time.

Be sure to ask your child how they are doing with their weekly letters, and ask to see their Reader's Notebook if you have not seen it lately!

*Please remember that your child should be reading for at least 30 minutes, 5 times per week. Their reading log should be filled out and signed by you frequently!

What's New in Writing?

We are in the process of working on graphic organizers and getting close to putting our drafts together!

Skills we will work on this week include:

-Turning our graphic organizers into paragraphs

-Writing an effective counterargument

-Drafting and conferring with teacher and partners
