Two More Weeks of the Fall Semester, Bears!
Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a lovely weekend. Saturday was a little dreary, but today looks to be a pretty day. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed a day of decorating your home for the holidays, preparing your home and families for your honored traditions or taking some time to enjoy each other. This newsletter only contains two new pieces of information: a message from Dr. Blaine for both in-person and virtual learners and information for finals for our virtual learners. Otherwise, I have repeated last week's articles in case that is helpful.
Within every edition of this newsletter every Sunday is a reminder to complete the SBISD Health Screener. Please help us keep everyone healthy, well and in school by completing that screener and refraining from sending any child to school who is demonstrating those symptoms or has exposure to someone who the family believes needs to be COVID tested. If you are unsure whether or not your child should report to school, please reach out to me (Stefanie.spencer@springbranchisd.com), Mr. Barry (steven.barry@springbranchisd.com) or Ms. Mulvey (mercedes.mulvey@springbranchisd.com) and we can try to help you.
Ten more Alarm Clocks, Bears! We can do this! Thank you everyone for all of your efforts in making this an awesome semester despite whatever 2020 had to throw our way!
A few reminders:
- Bringing Items to SBMS: SBMS will only allow the drop off of the following: chromebooks, assignments, books for Language Arts or medicine for the school nurse. Unfortunately, we are seeing too many families dropping off items to the front office that are unrelated to these things. The LearnSBISD plan indicates no drop off of items should be occurring and that visitors to the campus are restricted. As we watch numbers of parents dropping off items to our office and numbers of COVID cases tick upwards, we are tightening up our practices to make clearer what is of necessity and what is not. To ensure that your child has a back up plan for lunch, please visit SBISD Child Nutrition and put money on their account so they can purchase a lunch: https://www.springbranchisd.com/about/departments/finance/child-nutrition-services/payments-and-refunds.
- Health and Safety Reminder: One of the many unfortunate issues related to COVID-19 is that the signs and symptoms for COVID-19 can mirror other illnesses. Our LearnSBISD plan requires parents to complete a Health Screener for their students each morning and indicates that students must not report to school with symptoms delineated within that screener to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. When a child visits with Ms. Mulvey, our SBMS Nurse, and presents symptoms that could be related to COVID-19 she must follow a protocol that involves presenting the symptoms and context for the child (duration of symptoms, if a parent has tested positive or exposure to someone else has occurred) to the SBISD Intake Nurse and then work with the family to send the child home for a period of time. We fully recognize how stressful the "here and now" is for all families, but ask that your interactions with our nurse are kind and patient. We are happy to ask questions on your behalf and answer any questions you may have, but please know the health and safety of all students, their families and our staff are at the forefront of all that we do at SBMS. This is a very difficult year to serve as a school nurse and we are so grateful that Ms. Mulvey chose this as her life's work.
- SBISD Mask Policy: SBISD requires all school-aged students and staff to wear masks covering their noses and mouths all of the school day, except for when eating or drinking. Gaiters are allowed, but please be sure that students are able to wear them consistently and cover both their noses and mouths. Some students are having to hold their necks forward to keep their gaiters up and over their noses and mouths, so parents may wish to ask their children to wear masks if they prove easier and more comfortable for your child in that regard. Students not consistent in wearing their mask over their noses and mouths may face disciplinary consequences up to and including changing their learning model.
Be Well,
Stefanie Spencer
Message from Dr. Blaine for Parents of In-Person Learners
Dear Families of In-Person Learners,
As we approach the Winter Break and the end of the second nine weeks, I write to share important information and updates for the coming weeks.
- We’re happy to announce that all SBISD students will be able to enjoy school meals at no cost for the rest of the 2020-2021 school year due to the extension of the no-cost meals program by USDA. If you have any questions, please contact the Child Nutrition Services office.
- To continue our tradition of bringing holiday music to our communities, all SBISD Fine Arts Winter Concerts will be available online! Dates and links to the concerts can be viewed on the Fine Arts webpage. The password for each video link is winter.
- With two weeks remaining before break, I encourage all families to continue checking on your student’s grades and attendance in Skyward Family Access and academic progress through the ItsLearning Parent Portal.
- Please continue to do your part supporting in-school learning through this pandemic by:
- Completing required daily health screeners,
- Wearing masks and face shields, and,
- Making smart choices about parties, social gatherings and other off-campus events that may heighten the risk of COVID-19 spreading to and within our schools.
Your children are very important to us and we appreciate your partnership to ensure their health, safety and success!

Message from Dr. Blaine for Parents of Virtual Learners
Dear Families of Distance Learners,
As we approach the Winter Break and the end of the second nine weeks, I write to share important information about attendance and engagement for distance learners. Attendance is key to your child’s success in school; failure to attend and engage in classes will dramatically impact your child’s academic achievements.
As a reminder, SBISD is strictly enforcing attendance and engagement. Principals are monitoring student achievement closely and students currently on an Academic Support Plan or an Attendance Intervention Plan, with inadequate progress, may be required to return to in-person learning on January 5, 2021.
Please encourage your child’s regular virtual classroom attendance for the duration of the entire class for every class, every day. If your family has unusual circumstance or needs additional supports to ensure your child’s success, please reach out to your child’s teacher or principal.
Learn more about the process to require individual students to return to in-person learning here.
Check for your student’s success by:
- Regularly monitoring grades and attendance in Skyward Family Access
- Keeping up with progress through the ItsLearning Parent Portal
Your children are very important to us, and their academic growth and social and emotional well-being are our priorities. We appreciate your partnership to ensure their success!
Other Reminders and Updates:

SBMS Finals Information for Virtual Learners
Finals this year will be administered online for virtual students according to the schedule posted in the next article. For all cores subjects, the two programs that will be used are GoGuardian (for proctoring) and Eduphoria (for testing).
Teachers have been using both programs throughout the year to ensure that your child is familiar and comfortable with this type of testing. On test day, teachers will do an observation of the testing area, by asking your student to use their camera show their testing area. Next, all students will be asked to turn off their phones and place them in the background of the camera screen. After the testing area is secure, teachers will provide a web link to students for access their final via eduphora. Once your child has logged in, they will navigate to the correct test title and begin their test.
For more information on Eduphoria testing, please view the Google Slide HERE.
SBMS Finals Schedule
As you are aware, the SBISD calendar was amended at the beginning of the year. Part of the amendment meant that middle school students will not have early release days during the last week of the semester, but will instead have full days of instruction and final exams. To view the SBISD calendar, you may click here.
During the week of December 14th-18th, SBMS is planning to administer MAP Math and Reading to all students Monday and Tuesday during math and language arts classrooms and final exams Wednesday through Friday according to this schedule. Reviews for final exams will be posted by December 7th in each teacher's itsLearning course.
We intend to virtually proctor MAP and semester exams for those students taking part in remote learning for the second nine weeks. Directions for how to proceed if that relates to you and your family will be sent home after Thanksgiving.
SBISD Transportation Department Holiday Party
Please join us in sending messages of gratitude and contributions to the SBISD Transportation Department Holiday Party the week of December 14th-18th. Rather than hosting their annual ham or turkey lunch celebration, treat bags are being created for each Transportation employee.
Pre-packaged treats and gift cards are needed to help celebrate the 300 individuals who serve as mechanics, schedulers, dispatch staff and drivers for SBISD. Their work is no easy task and they do a great job getting our kids to and from our schools and ensure that our coaches have buses ready to roll to get our kids to and from athletic events. Whether your child rides a bus to school or not, their work has positively impacted every Bear at SBMS. Help us celebrate them by signing up at this Sign-Up Genius link. The drop-off date for your contribution is December 9th, so you have plenty of time to add those items to your grocery cart or grocery delivery service! Thank you for helping us celebrate members of our SBISD community!
SBISD Choice Application Window is OPEN!
SBISD offers students and families a range of school choices. We are committed to preparing all students to achieve our T-2-4 goal and successfully complete a technical certification, military service or a 2-year or 4-year degree. Choice options include Two-Way Dual Language, Charter and International Baccalaureate programs.
News from the SBMS Library
Overdue Library Books

SBISD Health Screener for In-Person Learners
Prior to the start of the school year, all families completed the SBISD Health & Safety Protocol Parent Acknowledgement Form. Included in these protocols is ensuring that every child coming to campus has a completed SBISD Health Screener every morning.
As a reminder, the health screener can be accessed via the district website (there is a blue box on the homepage titled ‘HEALTH SCREENER’ or by clicking here.) High school students may complete their own screener, but not those of their siblings.
Parents, it is critical that you report to your child's school if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, has had prolonged (15 or more minutes) direct exposure to someone who is COVID-19 positive, or is displaying symptoms of COVID-19. Please do not send your child to school. Please do complete the health screener and report to your school attendance office or nurse immediately. Please be sure to provide your contact information including a daytime telephone number where you can be reached.
View this video to see how to turn the screener into an icon (like an app) on your phone or tablet home screen for easier access:
See you soon! Stay tuned for messaging every Friday from SBISD!
