A Non-Fiction Report is coming!
The students will begin writing a Non-fiction report on an insect at the end of April. Your child will bring home an insect assignment late this week and they will need to find some resources by April 28th. Look for the insect assignment this week in their home folder. Thanks in advance for your help with this!

We’ll also learn how to change simple supplies into a kite in the informational text How To Make a Kite.

Writing
This week we will review persuasive writing. The second graders will be reminded that persuasive writing is trying to make someone feel or think a certain way. Our unit will begin with writing a book review. The students will create a graphic organizer, a flyer and write a persuasive email. The students will learn the specific details a persuasive piece MUST have. First, they must write the name of the thing you are talking about; for example book, place, show or outfit. Then, they should use words to make the reader feel good about what they are writing about. Finally, they need to use descriptive words throughout and make a powerful ending. We will spend time learning how to do each of these things. It promises to be a fun process.
Math:
Lesson 9.5: Compare measures and number stories
Lesson 9.6- Math Explorations of measurements, units of measure and finding area
Lesson 9.7- Count unit squares to find the area.
Science
Last week, we learned that the properties of minerals are similar to those we examined in rocks. This week, the students will focus on one single property; color. They will be introduced to a field test that geologists use to identify minerals. After sorting the minerals based on their color, the students will apply the streak test to discover each mineral’s identifying color, which is not always the same as its observable color. There are many other interesting properties of minerals. Using penlights, the students will explore the minerals and categorize them as transparent, translucent or opaque. When light is shone behind the mineral and it is visibly clear the mineral is considered transparent, but if it is blurry – the mineral is translucent, and if the light cannot be seen at all – the mineral is considered opaque. The students will also use the penlights to explore the luster of the minerals. A mineral’s luster depends on the way its surface reflects light. Minerals that reflect light have a metallic luster. All others are nonmetallic. The students will divide the minerals into these two groups, then look more closely at the nonmetallic minerals to decide if they have a more waxy, glassy or dull luster.
