SCC wins Santa Ana Tournament

SCC went into the championship game of the Santa Ana Tournament looking to take home another SAC tournament championship. It would be their third in four years. The Hawks accomplished the feat with a sounding 90-66 victory over the Vaqueros of Glendale College. Glendale entered the contest with a record of 2-0, while SCC had a 1-0 record after the win in the first game of the tournament over Long Beach City College. The Hawks jumped out to an eight-point lead early and maintained it throughout most of the first half. SCC led 40-30 at halftime. David Agba led the way with 10 points, while Preston Sims chipped in with 9. Agba also snared 5 rebounds in the half. The Hawks only shot 41.9% in the half, but their swarming defense held Glendale to 39% shooting from the field and 0 for 6 from the three-point line.
SCC built a comfortable lead during the second half and led by 26 with 3:39 left in the game. Strong bench play was the key to the second half surge. Erik Howlin led the way with 12 points in the half and finished as the second leading scorer with 15 points. Josh Griffin added 12 points. Luke Guzman finished with 7 points and Cameron Calcote scored 6 points. SCC’s bench outscored Glendale’s by the margin of 42-26. The leading scorer in the game was Preston Sims who finished with 19 points for the Hawks. Agba contributed 14 points and a game high 12 rebounds. Calcote led the team with 4 assists.
Santiago Canyon looks to continue their solid start to the season with 2 home games this week. The first will be on Wednesday, November 10th at 5:00pm vs. Chaffey College. The second game will be on Friday, November 12th at 6:00pm vs. Mira Costa College.
Hawks defeat Long Beach City in First Game of the 2021-22 Season

Final Score: 82-75
The Santiago Canyon College Men’s Basketball Team started off the season with a solid victory over Long Beach City College by the score of 82-75. After playing a shortened 8 game season, in which the Hawks finished 8-0, the team was excited to get a full regular season underway. The Hawks and the Vikings battled throughout the first half with 6 lead changes. The two teams were tied at halftime with 35 points apiece. Freshman guard Drew Yezbak led the Hawks with 11 points at the half, while Aaron Wadman added 10 points. Harrison Wiese led the team with 6 rebounds at the half. Santiago Canyon built a 7-point lead with 12:23 left in the first half, but Long Beach City battled back to tie the score to end the first half.
The second half saw the two teams exchange baskets and defensive stops on a regular basis. The Hawks were able to push out to a 9-point lead with 7:22 left in the game. They would never relinquish the lead after that point and finished strong to end the game. SCC had five players score in double digits. Leading the way was Wadman with 14 points. Freshman Erik Howlin came off the bench to add 13 points, 10 of those in the second half. Returning 1st Team All-Conference player, David Agba and Sophomore Preston Sims both chipped in with 12 points. Rounding out the double-digit scorers was Yezbak with his 11. Leading the way on the boards was Howlin and Harrison Wiese with 8 rebounds apiece. Wadman led the team with 4 assists.
Santiago Canyon returns to action in the Santa Ana Tournament on Saturday as they face Glendale College. Glendale was a 58-51 winner over Santa Ana in the other game of the tournament. Tip-off is set for 1:00pm.
