Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Opportunity

The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership State Leadership Seminar is an opportunity for high school sophomores to explore their leadership potential through our inspiring leadership development programs. This multi-day program is proven to provide students with an experience that cultivates personal growth and leadership development while building new connections and friendships throughout the state. Students return from HOBY with a deeper sense of self-awareness, elevated confidence, and the inspiration and tools to give back to their communities through leadership and service.

State Leadership Seminars are three-to-four day residential programs, typically held on a college or university campus. Virtual Leadership Seminars are two-to-three day live online programs that allow students to participate from the safety of their home without the need to travel. Regardless of format, HOBY Leadership Seminars are highly interactive programs, following our leadership development curriculum which allows students to discover leadership from a personal, group and socially responsible perspective.

Saucon Valley High School is now accepting applications and will select one 10th grade student to attend the Seminar this summer. The State Leadership Seminar will take place starting in early-mid June. Students will be required to attend the seminar in its entirety. The cost of the program is paid for by the School District. After each seminar, HOBY alumni are challenged to complete 100 hours of community service within the next year as a way to put their passion and newly built leadership skills into action.

Parent Advisory (Updated link)

We would like to start a Parent Advisory to discuss various programs, events, topics, and provide input to the Principal. In many ways, the Parent Advisory serves as a non-policy making “sounding board” for the Principal offering a parent’s perspective on various issues and topics. Each Parent Advisory attendee is asked to bring comments, concerns and ideas to the meeting to discuss and will also have opportunities to learn more about topics of interest taking place in the High School.
We apologize, in our last newsletter the link was not working correctly- please use this new updated link to sign up, if you have not already done so! If interested in attending or being part of the group, please complete this form. The form asks if you would prefer a meeting type of Zoom or in-person, types of information you would like to discuss, and the best days/times to have meetings...please let us know this information so we can reach the most parents and guardians!

Reminder- SAT School Day Registration Deadline

Seniors! If you have signed up to take the School Day SAT on October 13, you need to complete your registration by paying $55 ASAP. Please make checks payable to Saucon Valley High School and drop off your payment to Mrs. Schuller in the Guidance Office. If you have any questions, please stop in or email your Counselor.

Reminder: PSAT October 13

The PSAT will be given to all students in grades 9, 10, and 11 on Wednesday, October 13 during the school day. There is no charge for the test. Students in grade 11 should take the PSAT as the scores from this test are used to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. It is also recommended for 11th graders to use these scores to prepare to take the SAT by using the Khan Academy practice program.

Update Keystone Exam Scores and Statewide Graduation Requirements

The Department of Education has made modifications to statewide testing due to the changes in instruction from the pandemic. We have received information regarding Keystone Exam scores from testing that took place at the end of last school year. We have received the unofficial scores and the official scores will be released in December.

This year will also be the first year of the Statewide Graduation Requirements for the current Junior class. We will be sending out more information regarding the requirements and the five pathways in the near future. The first two pathways are based on Keystone scores. The Counselors will begin meeting with the each student in the Class of 2023 to review their information and create an action plan to meet the requirements. For more information, please click here for the historical background of legislation and click here to see the information as provided in our Program of Studies (page 3). We are also providing the Pathway Graphic document below for more information. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Gary, Mrs. Braxmeier, or your child's Counselor.

November 2- Election Day (Traffic Alert)

Tuesday, November 2 is Election Day. There are two polling locations taking place in the High School LGI (Audion) during the day. The site will be secure to keep the public separated from the students. The entry door is located by the circle in the front of the building- we expect that voters will be trying to park in the circle and will be parking in the student lot during student drop off and pick up. We will have people onsite to help with traffic, but if possible, we ask that parents/guardians use the cafeteria lot drop off to help with traffic.

Also, a few traffic reminders...

**when dropping off or picking up, please pull all the way around the circle so that more students are able to enter/exit their vehicles and traffic does not back up onto Polk Valley Road.

**please DO NOT use the student parking lot to drop off or pick up students. It is very busy with students walking and driving and the extra traffic is dangerous to our students!

**please DO NOT attempt to drive through the student parking lot and exit left to get to Polk Valley Road! This creates a dangerous situation and the possibility of accidents.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in these matters!
