2019-2020 Literacy
As we enter the second half of the first trimester, we will again embark on our School Wide Writing. Mary Kew is the building resource for all literacy learning activities that you incorporate in your teaching. Please email her at mkew@capetech.us if you would like some support either finding resources, utilizing new strategies or just to bounce an idea off her to verify your thinking. She can support you as you instruct on this assignment. Also here is the link to the Literacy Resource Page, which is the landing page for all approved school wide strategies.
Here is the process for School Wide Writing:
Students will partake in a text-dependent writing assignment. This assignment will apply a close reading strategy such as FUNI Reading to a text, (journal article or other assigned reading that should coincide with what you are teaching) and then respond to a text-dependent question. A text-dependent question is a question that can only be answered by referring back to the text.
FUNI Reading is a strategy we utilize as a school community for students to read new text/content and be able to analyze and pull out important information from that source. This is called "close reading." Please find FUNI Reading guideline by clicking here. If you look at the attachment, it is broken down as symbols that students can use when reading new text to help them decipher information.
F= Familiar Information that the student knows. Students may recognize their own background knowledge and mark it in their text.
U= Unsure, students can note to themselves that they still have questions about what this is saying in the text
N= New information that the student did not know prior to reading the text
I (Underline/highlight) = Important information that contains main ideas of the text or may answer or help to answer the prompt/question
Amy McHugh in the Library is a great resource to help find articles that speak directly to what you are teaching. Please let her know what content you are covering and she will help you locate articles in professional journals or books that speak to that content. Her email is amchugh@capetech.us
Teachers should use our school wide writing response template if they are unsure of how they were going to tackle the writing. That writing response template can be found by clicking here. Teachers should utilize the School Wide Writing Rubric to assess their student work. Please click here for School Wide Writing w FUNI Rubric and click here for School Wide Writing Rubric Feedback Guide.
An administrator will want to see student work.Teachers should submit student samples to their supervisor within a week after the end of the trimester. However, if you wait until the end of the trimester to assign the writing it may not be the student’s best work. Please submit up to ten writing samples total that represent excellent, fair and inadequate writing done by your students. You could think of this in terms of A work, C work and F work, if that helps. Please do not submit all of your students' writing from this assignment.
Thank you and happy writing,
Billy
