We are looking to raise the praise and will work hard to not be disruptive! If your grade level has not yet chosen a date to have your praise walk, please add it to your PLC agendas to discuss. NC Check Ins:
The second round of NC Check Ins is coming next week. 3-5 will take math on Tuesday, January 14th and 4-5 will take reading on Wednesday, January 15th. Please be sure to maintain a testing environment on these days. This means:
Classrooms should be quiet during testing
Specials are cancelled until testing is complete
Movement in hallways should be kept to a minimum
No outdoor recess until testing is completed. Feel free to use the ball field/soccer field for an organized game if you choose. We will let everyone know when testing is complete.
Here is the log-in support document and the proctor schedule
Gen ed administrators, please check your testing bin out from Mandy’s office as early as possible. I will be here at 7:00!

- Report Cards go Home with everyone - Wednesday, January 29th
Self Care:
Self Care and Tier 1 Behavior PD:
Here is the powerpoint from Tuesday’s staff meeting. At the end of the powerpoint is a “Summary of Strategies” slide for the tier 1 teacher behaviors we discussed. Please try to remember to use these strategies with your students to help reduce anxiety and deescalate student behaviors. Please remember to focus on the EMOTIONS creating the behavior and not just the behavior. Also remember your 3:1 positive to negative ratio!
Please also remember to focus on your self care! You can’t handle all of your students’ emotions if you aren’t taking care of yourself. There are suggestions in the note sections of the powerpoint for self care. There are also articles and websites to explore on the “Helpful Links” slide. If you are noticing any of the signs of burnout or stress listed on the powerpoint, please take some time for your self care and reach out to someone if it isn’t working. Remember the district has the Employee Assistance Program too:
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
An EAP is a company-sponsored benefit that offers the support and resources you need to address personal or work-related challenges and concerns. It's confidential and free to all employees and your household family members.
Available 24/7/365, Free/Confidential, Legal and Financial Consultations, Telephonic or face-to-face, Connect with local providers, Referrals to other resources
To seek assistance, simply call 800.633.3353 or visit mygroup.com
Self Care Challenge: Monday we will start our Self Care Challenge! Stop by the lounge to document each time you took care of yourself. You’ll write your name, what you did, and color in a paw. When NCE reaches 200 filled in paws, we’ll celebrate with a staff reward! Use this google form to send ideas for what you’d like for a staff prize! Also, if you did not get an envelope for the Envelope Assistance strategy discussed at the staff meeting Tuesday, please ask Mandy.
Curriculum and MOY News:
New DPI Website and Links: DPI has updated their website. There is a LOT of clicking involved to get you to places! Here are some easy ways to access standards and unpacking documents.
New dpi website: https://www.dpi.nc.gov
NC Standard Course of Study -- This link will get you to any subject’s standards and unpacking documents
Math Standards and Unpacking Documents -- The staff page has been updated with this new link to the math standards
English Language Arts Standards and Unpacking Documents -- The staff page has been updated with this new link to the ELA standards
The K-12 Social Studies Division has worked to revise our Social Studies standards. They are asking for each grade level teacher to give feedback. The survey is grade level specific. The link below will give you access to each grade level document and survey to give feedback. Mandy has also linked these into PLC agendas if you want to give united feedback. Let your voices be heard! https://sites.google.com/dpi.nc.gov/social-studies/standards/public-review-draft-1
MOY Benchmarking: Benchmarking should not impact I/E. I/E small groups should continue through benchmarking.
We have scheduled our dates to have Darlene join us for our i/e PLC conversations. Please ensure all your benchmarking is complete by your date.
Wednesday, January 29th -- 4th/2nd/1st
Tuesday February 4th -- 5th/3rd/K
IStation benchmarking window is the whole month of January (1/6/20 - 1/31/20)
Please add to your PLC agendas a time to talk about a plan for IStation benchmarking and if support is needed.
Spanish and English must be completed for MOY for DL classes
The student’s FIRST attempt during the benchmark month will be the data used for the state reporting purposes
If something goes wrong when a student is testing and you feel the student needs to repeat the test -- Do NOT just assign an on demand assessment for a student to do the ISIP MOY benchmark again without talking to Mandy first. We will be tracking these “invalidations”.
STAR math needs to be completed by February 1st by grades 1 -5.
iReady MOY diagnostic window is January 14 - January 31
Daphne Terry will assign everyone’s iReady diagnostic for you.
MOY must be done by Kindergarten classes only.
It is optional for grades 1-5 but your students’ personalized pathways will not change and adjust if you do not do the MOY diagnostic.
If you use iReady regularly in your classrooms, it is highly recommended that you have the students complete the MOY diagnostic so their personalized pathways are updated and accurate. If you do not use it, there is no need to complete the MOY diagnostic.
DESSA mini -- The window to complete the DESSA mini is February 15 - March 15.
Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) for IStation Benchmarking:
Grades K-1 you do not need to do ORF
Grade 2 -- You will need to ORF all of your students except your really high readers.
Grades 3 - 5 - You will only need to ORF the lowest 20% of your students. This should also include students that are already in a fluency i/e group or students you have concerns about their fluency.
If you are the fluency teacher for an i/e group in grades 2-5, you should administer the ORF benchmark during an i/e block. Please discuss with your i/e students’ teachers about this to ensure you are on the same page.
Please add this to your PLC agenda if you have questions or concerns.
The icon for the ORF is in Clever. It will be a separate icon in your students’ clever page next to the IStation ISIP icon.
The ORF is NOT included in the overall reading score OR what is evaluated by EVAAS
Students will log into ORF using the new separate icon. They will use their computer and headphones to hear directions and read aloud to the computer. The computer will score their work for you. If you want to listen to your student reading and score the ORF yourself, you can do that as many times as you’d like.
If you are interested in learning about how to access and use ORF see the information below:
