JBD FRIDAY FOCUS
John B. Dey F amily Newsletter April 13, 2018
Month of the Military CHILD EVENTS
April is the Month of the Military Child. At John B. Dey, we have approximately 300 military connected children. To honor the service of our military parents and the sacrifices of our children, we have schedule of events to share. Please join us in the celebration and participate in the spirit days.
First, we are collecting pictures of military service members and their children. Please send in a picture of the service member in uniform and your child if you would like it displayed on our honor board in the foyer. Please let us know if you would like the picture returned.
This week, we would like to get started by celebrating PURPLE UP, on Friday, April 13. The entire school division is wearing purple this Friday to honor our military members and children.
During the week of April 16-20, is spirit week. The schedule is as follows:
Monday 4/16 - Camo Day
Tuesday 4/17 - Red, White, and Blue Day
Wednesday 4/18 - Military Word Shirt Day
Thursday 4/19 - Uniforms and Stars
Friday 4/20 - Purple Up Day #2
During the week of April 23-27, we would like to feature military parents in uniform, with their children on the announcements. We are hoping to find at least one parent from each service organization; Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force and Army. If you are interested in being a part of that event, please email Mrs. Bianchi, at Elizabeth.Bianchi@vbschools.com with your availability. Announcements begin at 8:10 a.m. and conclude by 8:20 a.m., Monday-Friday.
John B. Dey looks forward to celebrating and honoring our military children!

Robert Irvine from the Food Network, makes a suprise visit to John B. Dey!
Staff and students alike were so excited to meet Robert Irvine. Robert Irvine is mostly known by his show, Restaurant Impossible, where he helps failing restaurant businesses get a reboot through a 36 hour turn around. That's just one way his altruism has helped others. A veteran of the English Navy, Robert Irvine has been a supporter of the military and has worked with the USO to uplift troops overseas and encourage service men and women around the globe to continue their honorable careers. Currently, Robert Irvine has several business ventures that involve food and fitness products. A portion of his proceeds for all of his ventures go to support Veterans, Wounded Warriors, and First Responders.
While visiting JBD on Friday for about an hour, he encouraged students to work hard and listen to their teachers, highlighted the sacrifices our military children make due to the service of the parents, and gave students insight on ways to get their creative ideas turned into reality. Mr. Irvine's latest venture is a new show that will be featured on CBS in the fall that helps children ages 6-16 turn their innovative ideas into businesses-similar to a kid's Shark Tank. The visit was a great way to honor our Purple Up day for the military children.

BRICK ENGRAVING PROJECT
John B Dey families,
Now is your chance to leave a small legacy at John B Dey! The PTA and administrative staff have combined efforts to offer the opportunity for you to purchase a brick (or more!) that can be engraved with your choice of wording...your family name / your child's name / your business / inpiration / in honorarium...whatever you choose. These bricks will be laid on JBD's property starting with the new entrance to the school. You will have 3 weeks to send in your request and payment (cash or check only), so don't delay!
Find the form here to print and send in to the school with your child in an envelope indicating "BRICK PROJECT".
CLINIC CORNER
- Keeping your child home for fevers over 100 ,vomiting and/or diarrhea. They must be symptom free without medication for 24 hours before returning to school
- WASH YOUR HANDS. Please watch your child wash their hands. Many do not wash the back of their hands and many use the soap but little water, not lathering well. Proper handwashing should include these steps:
- Wet hands well
- Put soap on hands
- Wash hands to the count of twenty (sing Happy Birthday)
- Getting a good lather
- Rinse completely
- Dry well
- Use lotion if you find your hands chapped or cracked where germs can harbor
- Cough or sneeze into your sleeve and not your hands. If you forget, just wash those hands!!!
Thanks and lets all have a healthy spring!

JDRF Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes
Dear John B. Dey Parents, Staff, and Students:
Each day, 40 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the United States alone. That’s the equivalent of an entire classroom full of students each and every day! While diagnosis frequently occurs in childhood and adolescence, it can and does strike adults as well. Diabetes is one of the most costly chronic diseases, and children who have T1D will never outgrow it. To stay alive, they must take multiple insulin injections or use an insulin pump, and they test their blood sugar by pricking their fingers about six times a day.
Insulin is not a cure! That is why our school is proud to participate in JDRF’s Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes Program. With the slogan “Kids Helping Kids”, our students will be learning about type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. At the same time, they will learn what it means to make a difference by raising money for T1D research!
We will kick off our campaign on April 16. At that time, we will distribute more information and collection envelopes. With help from a parent, students can register online at kidswalk.jdrf.org. Once registered, students can create a personal fundraising page to share their story and send emails to friends and family members asking for their support.
We encourage children to turn in their donations on the day of the Kids Walk: April 30. We will enjoy a healthy, brisk walk and celebrate our success! Parents are welcome to join your child at the Walk!
The funds collected will be given to JDRF, the leading global organization focused on T1D research. The goal of JDRF research is to improve the lives of all people affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D.
Please visit kidswalk.jdrf.org for more information. Thank you for your support of this worthy cause!
