MERRY CHRISTMAS!

It is hard to believe that we only have a few days left of our first semester. How far so many of them have come from the first day of school. Looking forward to a great 2nd half of 5th grade in 2016! Merry Christmas to you all from this crazy bunch!

White Elephant Gift

REMINDER -- Our class will be having a White Elephant Gift Exchange on Tuesday, December 22nd before we dismiss for the Christmas break. If students want to participate, they can bring a "recycled gift" (value of less than $5) that they would like to exchange. Gifts can be silly, or odd, but must be appropriate for school. Students are not required by any means to bring a white elephant gift and should not go out and buy a gift!

Christmas Around the World

The students were assigned a country to research to see how Christmas was celebrated. We used Glogster, a website based program, to present our findings. You can view the students' projects via the document below.

Cube Sign-Up

Several students have signed up to run the iPad at the home basketball games this year. Mrs. Abi sent home a paper copy of the schedule on Tuesday. Here is a digital copy as well.

Band Notes

Students always ask me if they should keep writing down their practice minutes over the Christmas break. The answer is, YES! But I understand that some students might not have as many minutes to report over the holidays. We are also going to be very busy at our house, and there are many obligations to attend to, as well as sneaking in a little relaxation. Here’s what I recommend:

Set a reasonable goal for practicing over the break (ie: practice three times, practice for 30 minutes a week, practice 100 minutes total for the break, etc…) Then, keep track of your minutes on the practice record just like always (remember, each box on the practice record is a day of the calendar) and see how close you come to your goal. If you meet it, great! If you don’t, we’ll start fresh in the New Year!

Students should have either two or three weeks’ worth of minutes to report when they come back in January, and, yes, there will be some zeroes. Practicing is the perfect solution when your student is “bored” and doesn’t have “anything to do.” Have you ever heard that before?!?!

Building on Books Contest

The LIW PTO is sponsoring a "Building on Books" contest that will take place over Christmas break. During break, students are encouraged to submit a model of a scene from a book using any creative tool (Minecraft/Build with Chrome, Play-doh, Legos, etc). Presentations should showcase a building or scene from a book read by the student. Students are encouraged to unleash their creativity and have fun! Students can bring the physical model, or e-mail an electronic model to Mrs. Abi. They also should add a written explanation on the form that will be attached to the note sent home. The computer lab will be open to all students on Dec. 28th from 2-4pm. Entries must be submitted by January 5th. There will be one winner chosen from grades 4 and 5 (as well as K-1, 2-3) and the winning entry will receive a $10 Scholastic gift card! Information on this contest will be sent home on Friday! What a neat activity for the students!
