Paul Kivela, MD, MAS, FACEP, Vision and Goals
There are many issues confronting Emergency Medicine; however, I believe there are four key issues that demand our immediate attention and action
These include:
INTREGRITY OF EMERGENY MEDICINE AS A SPECIALTY
With healthcare reform and economic uncertainties, it is crucial we not only take strong positions, but also come up with novel strategies to ensure emergency medicine remains a viable specialty and is not commoditized. My background in academics and experience with rural emergency medicine prove me with the experience necessary to protect residency programs, board certification, and work to solve the workforce disparities.
FAIR PAYMENT FOR OUR SERVICES
We provide a critical service and deserve fair compensation. We must educate and convince the public that emergency medicine is not a special interest but is everyone’s interest. My legislative regulatory and reimbursement experience make me well suited to achieve these goals. I will continue to work diligently to develop consensus and a central understanding of what constitutes fair payment.
IMPROVEMENT OF OUR PRACTICE ENVIRONMENT
Decreasing overcrowding and efficient workflow are paramount to ensuring that we are able to meet the demand for emergency services. We must work together to develop novel approaches to malpractice and quality assurance, so that we area not given mandates by non-clinicians. I work clinically and have been directly affected by arbitrary rules. I have a history of aggressively working to find risk management solutions that improve patient care and improve our practice environment.
GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF ACEP
We must continue to work aggressively to include all emergency physicians and use our resources wisely. I am dedicated to build ?????? and make sure our members receive ????? value for there membership.
