Library Ledger
Summitt Library: May 11- 20, 2020
Howdy Summitt Eagles!
HOLD ON TO YOUR LIBRARY BOOKS
Normally, I'd be asking you to bring them in, sending out notices, and making phone calls home. For now, please gather any Summitt Elementary Library books you may have, and put them in a safe place like on a bookshelf, in your backpack, or in your desk or workstation at home. If you are moving out of the city, maybe you can pass them on to a trusted family friend to turn in for you later. If you are in 5th grade, or moving onto a new school next year, but you'll still be in Austin, don't worry! I'll reach out to you when we are back at school.
PLAN TO AVOID SUMMER SLIDE
This is the time I've year I'd also be talking to you about avoiding the dreaded Summer Slide. No that is not the striped ride at Typhoon Texas. Summer Slide is what happens to our hard-earned progress over the past school year when we do not practice our reading over the summer. Keep reading to the end of the Library Ledger for lots of ideas to keep your mind strong and nimble throughout the long hot summer!
I'm thinking of you. For me some days are better than others. Some days life feels normal, and some days not so much. I imagine for you maybe it is the same? Keep riding those waves with your face towards the sun. I'm only ever a phone call or email away if you need me.
Hugs and kisses,
Mrs. Richey

Howdy Summitt Eagles!
Hello, friends and families! It is finally May! I can’t quite believe it, can you? This week is all about family! Our families near and far, in our homes and in our hearts. Families by blood and by birth and families by fate and circumstance.
We are kicking off the week by celebrating our school moms and dads, those amazing Summitt teachers for all their hard work and dedication. I hope you take some time to send them a card, or a heartfelt email. It's those little things that mean so much!
As you may recall, we celebrated Librarians’ Appreciation Week a few weeks ago. I received cookies and gift cards from my co-workers and Summitt families. But one of the most touching things I received was a Flipgrid of thanks from one of the 3rd grade classes. It was so sweet! It gave me an opportunity to see the faces and hear the voices of some of my much missed students. If your homeroom parent sent you something similar to do for your teacher, please do it! It’s free and easy, and really touching.
Also, this Sunday, May 10, will mark Mothers' Day. This is a special day to recognize all the "mothers" in our lives--the moms, grandmoms, aunts, older sisters, godmothers, neighbors, teachers, mentors--who mother us with their warmth and caring. The world is a much nicer, softer, more cuddly place thanks to all those moms. So, make sure you show those special people a little gratitude, huh?
In this week's Library Ledger, you can find some great books about families, and some fun activities, too, what I’m reading, a read aloud, some recommended reads and much, much more. So keep reading for the latest scoop on all things library!
Hugs and kisses, Eagles!
Mrs. Richey
My Sincerest Apologies. . .
I will also not be hosting a Book Bites session, Tuesday, May 5, due to the fact that I will be up at school closing down the library at that time. Again, my apologies! Please find me Thursday at noon and Friday at 1:30pm for 2 different storytimes.
What I am Reading Right Now
Families, Families, Families by Suzanne & Max Lang
Moms, dads, sisters, brothers — and even Great Aunt Sue — appear in dozens of combinations, demonstrating all kinds of nontraditional families! Listen to Mrs. Richey read it by clicking HERE.
Fur, Feather, Fin: All of Us Are Kin by Diane Lang
Available through Overdrive at Austin Public Library.
Book Scavenger (Book #1) by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman
For twelve-year-old Emily, the best thing about moving to San Francisco is that it's the home city of her literary idol: Garrison Griswold, book publisher and creator of the online sensation Book Scavenger (a game where books are hidden in cities all over the country and clues to find them are revealed through puzzles).
This a fun read for fans of Mr. Lemoncello. It is full of puzzles and ciphers, and coolest part, you can become a real-life book scavenger after reading this book! Come hear Chapter 1, this Friday, May 8, at First Chapter Fridays.

April 20 - May 1, 2020
Hello From Mrs. Richey
Hello, Summitt Eagles!
It’s your fabulous and fearless librarian with library news for the week of April 27. I hope you are having a good one so far. That sunshine we had early in the week has definitely put some pep in my step. This week my girls and I set some blankets up in the yard, and took to the great outdoors. Even my dog comes out to join us; although, he prefers to sit in the sunny spots. He sort of melts--like a puppy puddle.
I’m adding a few new things to my Ledger this week in an attempt to make things more accessible and to drive more traffic to our e-resources. So, while you will find links to what I’m reading this week in Blend, you will also find a direct link to me reading a story embedded right in the newsletter! I’ve even added a padlet link so you can share any thoughts or connections about the story. I hope you give it a try. I’d love to hear from you.
I will also be reviewing some information that I’ve shared already. I realize that there has been so much to learn that maybe you missed some things from my earliest newsletters. This will be a chance to get caught up on some resources you may have missed the first time.
I’ve also decided to streamline my office hours. So, while you can still reach me from 11:30 - 12:30 pm and 3 - 4 pm, Monday through Friday, I am asking that you sign up via email so I can plan my time more efficiently. As well, I will be adding two additional live storytimes on Tuesdays and Thursdays! So keep reading to learn about all this and more!
Hugs and kisses,
Mrs. Richey
P.S. If you've been wondering about what to do with your Summitt library books, don't worry! Put them in a safe place, like up on a shelf, in a neat stack on your desk, or even in your backpack. When I am able, I will give you information about how to turn them in. Right now, we don't have a safe way to this.
Round of applause to. . .
It was great seeing some friends last week! Thank you to Mila and Felix O. and Witten and Tytus C. (and baby sisters) for coming to First Chapter Friday! You are the reason I thought I’d start a lunch time readaloud, so you can listen while you enjoy your Spaghetti-O’s! Keep reading for more info about Book Bites--storytime at lunchtime.
Thank you to Ava K. in kindergarten for being my first student to attend one of my office hours . . . EVER!!!
Thank you to all my colleagues and the Summitt community once again for the cookies, texts, gift cards, class cards, and well wishes for Librarian Appreciation Week! I am so appreciative of all of you!

Hello from Mrs. Richey
I hope you enjoyed another lovely weekend with your family. My family has been enjoying this roller coaster weather--the hot and the cold. I don't really mind either, as long as there are blue skies and sunshine.
It's spring! The flowers are in bloom. The bees are buzzing. The butterflies are flitting about. I hope you have had an opportunity to go outside and notice the signs of spring in your own backyard. Each day the sun continues to rise and the earth continues to turn. That is reason enough for us to be thankful and make the most of each day, don't you think?
This week I have a few updates, including corrected information regarding my Zoom meetings. I'm so sorry if you have been trying to reach me. I had the information off by one number! I have some login information regarding Mackin and some great reading recommendations from an old favorite, Tumblebooks. So, please read down to the end of this week for all news library--and come visit me sometime during my office hours. I miss you!
Have a great week Summitt Eagles! Go out there and live your best life!
Hugs and kisses,
Mrs. Richey

Thank you all for your help. When we do finally return to the library, it will be as vibrant and alive as ever thanks to the due-diligence of these people.

April 6 - 10
Hello, from Mrs. Richey
Howdy-ho, Eagles!
It's Mrs. Richey, and I'm back again with some updates for the week. Monday, April 6th, marked the beginning of Continuous Learning at home. By now you have heard from your various teachers, and probably received some review lessons and activities to get your brain pumping again.
I, too, have some read alouds to share with you that also include some activities. These are activities designed to get you thinking and talking about what we are reading. They are not homework. They are not for a grade. They are "Food for Thought" activities. Remember, reading is what connects us to all humanity. And, these days more than ever, we need that connection to make sense of the world we are living in and be reminded that we are NOT alone.
Read to the bottom for information about our ongoing online book fair, this week's recommended read, my electronic resources of the week, links and times for my recorded and live story times, and how to reach me throughout the week. I also have a surprise link at the end for any of my recent Birthday Book Club kiddos!
Love to you all! I miss you like crazy! Keep smiling!
Love, Mrs. Richey

Surprise!!!
March 30 - April 3
Hello From Mrs. Richey
Today I have some good news and I have some bad news. Which do you want first? The bad news? The bad news is that we will not be able to have our usual Spring Book Fair in the library. BUT, the good news is we will be able to have an Online ONLY book fair. This means that starting, Wednesday, April 1, you can visit our Scholastic Book Fair using your web-browsing device. You can shop from the safety of your home with mom, dad, grandparents, aunts, uncles, whomever!!--all online. And, the best part is that your order will be delivered right to your home! So cool, huh?
I know it is not the same, but Summitt Eagles are adaptable and resilient. Give it a try! You might really like it.
Included in this Ledger are links about book fair, more recommended reads, my online resource of the week, and a calendar of events you can participate in soon, if you'd like, with me via Zoom. Make sure you read to the bottom of this week's highlights to get all the info.
Until next week, keep smiling! I'm thinking of you, and sending you great big hugs wherever you are!
Love,
Mrs. Richey,
Your fantastic and fearless librarian

If for some reason, your student did not receive a card or lost their card, do not fret.
- If your student lost the card, call the library at 512-974-7475 and have the information sent to the email address listed on the account. (It is likely the primary parent's email address.)
- If your student never received a card but think s/he should have, call that same number above.
- If you opted out or can't figure it out another way, an adult can apply for a virtual card at this link: https://library.austintexas.gov/virtual
BTW, no one answers that phone but they DO call back.
Also, the chat with a librarian feature on the virtual library is working great, so that's an awesome way for you to get help as well.

I will be available--at some time, TBD, to help you or just to talk. Of course, my specialty is books! I am happy to help you access resources, talk about your latest book crush, or steer you towards some great new books. More information coming soon! Stay tuned for exact times!
