Technology Tip
Has your child experienced trouble accessing IXL, O365, HMH, or other school assigned websites at home? Does it seem as though your home wireless network is not working?
The district's filtering system called, Securly, requires students to authenticate when they login to a network other than the school's. Your child may get a screen that looks like the one below. Your child simply needs to click on, Sign in with Microsoft Azure.
Student will always have less issues accessing school applications if they use the web browser, EDGE, at home as it seems to work the best with the filtering system.
Winter MAP
Upon our return from Winter Break, students will begin taking NWEA MAP assessments in math, reading, and science classes. The NWEA MAP assessment is designed to show growth over time. The assessments students take this winter compared to how they scored when they took the assessments in the fall is a significant indicator of growth. The data is used to help place students in courses for next school year.
Assessments will take place on the following dates:
- Jan. 7-11-Science
- Jan. 14-18-Math
- Jan. 21-25-ELA
After School Activites End Dec 19th for the Semester

STEAM Club Highlights and NEW January Activities
Students took part in the STEAM Club activity, "Instant Challenge," on Thursday, December 13th. Participants had fun working on a performance-based and a task-based problem during the event! Students were faced with a challenge and given specific materials to use to create a solution to the challenge.
The CO2 Car Makers had fun building, painting, and racing their cars!
Sign-ups for new January activities will be emailed out on Jan. 7. The activities will include an improv activity, a third group for the CO2 Car Making activity, and a SCAMPER activity where students change the characteristics of everyday items to make something new.

Upcoming Preparedness Drill
In continuing our efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment for our students and staff at Buffett Magnet Middle School, we will practice one more emergency drill this month. This is a drill to ensure that all students and staff in our school know what to do in case of a real emergency situation.
We will practice a LOCKDOWN drill on Thursday, December 20, 2018, at approximately 9:00 A.M. During the lockdown practice drill, a team of police officers will be deployed. During the lockdown drill, students and staff move clear of windows with the lights off and the doors locked. The officers will sweep the building to check that procedures have been followed. The drill will only take a few minutes.
Please review this information with your child so that it is understood that this is only a drill. Thank you for supporting the safety efforts of Buffett Middle School to protect the students, staff, and visitors in our building.
