Update From the Executive Director
Launching Pad
A new year, a new legislative session, 62 new Missouri House of Representatives, four new Missouri State Board of Education Members, a new commissioner, new challenges, but, also, new opportunities. I always valued the start of something new and embraced the "fresh start" "clean slate" of another year. To maximize this time of the year, think about giving a "State of the School Address," to your staff, PTSA, or how about scheduling grade level meetings to celebrate the first semester and to reiterate your expectations. Whatever you do, use the start of 2019 as a "launching pad" and have the belief that it's going to be a great year.

Legislative Bulletin
With the new legislative session underway, stay up to date with what is happening at the state capitol. The Legislative Bulletin is prepared each week to provide an overview for Missouri school administrators on issues impacting schools. It is your one source to help stay educated on essential matters in Jefferson City.
State Board of Education Update
The State Board of Education met for the first time this past Tuesday with returning Commissioner, Dr. Margie Vandeven. The agenda included the approval of Jonathan Petersen to serve on MACCE replacing Dr. April Adams, Principal at Liberty High School. On behalf of the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals, we are grateful for the service of April serving on MACCE for several years. April has represented MoASSP exceptionally well during her tenure. Jonathan is the Principal of Smithton High School. We look forward to his future involvement and leadership on MACCE.
Dr. Paul Katnik, Assistant Commissioner, Office of Educator Quality, shared sobering information regarding Missouri's teacher workforce. Missouri has fallen to 49th in average teacher pay for beginning teachers. Board members had a lengthy discussion on this issue. Teachers represent the largest workforce in Missouri. Dr. Chris Neale, Assistant Commissioner, Office of Quality Schools, provided an update on MSIP 6.

Your principal voice is essential as we move into the 2019 legislative session. There isn't a better way for you to help educate legislators than to invite them to come to your school for a visit and shadow you. When you do, take a photo or two, and tag us @MoASSP.
