Echoes Through Time Fieldtrip

On Friday, December 11th, the fifth grade class traveled to Springville, New York, to visit Echoes Through Time, a museum of the Civil War. During this trip, the students were given a guided tour of the museum's artifacts by the director of the museum. They learned about the artillery, cavalry, infantry and weapons of the Civil War. There was a demonstration of the proper technique and protocol for loading and firing a musket as well as the proper use of a cavalry soldier's sword. The fifth graders ate their lunches on the back patio of the museum on this beautiful mid-December day!!

Third Grade Expedition

Third grade had the opportunity to meet a real cartographer this week! Professor Nick Lang, from Mercyhurst University, visited on Monday. A cartographer is a person engaged in the production of maps. He spoke to students about various types of maps and his research of the planet Venus. Dr. Lang will be creating a geologic map of landforms on Venus, and our students will be creating a map of Ripley and various Ripley's around the world. He shared several different types of maps and globes with the students. We look forward to seeing Dr. Lang again and presenting our maps to him.

Choose Your Own Adventure!

Writing a Choose Your Own Adventure narrative has been a lot of hard work! Students are featured this week showing the anchor charts that we use every day to revise our narratives. The pencil on the narrative chart is changed daily to feature a different color as we look at a different feature of our written work. Students have edited features of their work such as word choice, organization, dialogue and more! Students have learned a great deal about the four animals they researched: a mimic octopus, a springbok gazelle, a three-banded armadillo and a monarch butterfly. Students will have final drafts to share over winter recess. Catch up with a fourth grader to see if you can survive their adventure!

Sixth Grade

Our sixth graders started a new ELA novel, Bud not Buddy, this month. They have been analyzing figurative language, word choice and meaning within the novel. The students have been comparing their learning from Bud not Buddy to a Commencement Address delivered by Steve Jobs. The students have enjoyed learning interesting facts about Jobs, not only was he the founder of Apple but also of the largest animation company, Pixar!

In math, students are diving into the world of rational numbers. They are learning to not only INTERPRET rational numbers in the real world but also how to EXPLAIN rational numbers in the real world. With all of this learning students are using so many of their Ripley Character Strengths to persevere through all of this great learning!
