Cyclone Connect
March 2020 Edition
Note from Mrs. Whittaker
It's hard to believe the 3rd quarter of the 2019-2020 school year just ended. We recognize that families, students & teachers are always extremely busy this time of the year. Please encourage your student to use their Cyclone Hour time wisely to gain access to teachers & complete their homework. March will be over before we blink our eyes!
Thank you for continuing to partner with us as your student(s) journey through high school.
What are student-led conferences?
We are excited to do our first round of student-led conferences this Spring!
A student-led conference is a conference with parents led by the student. The role of the classroom teacher is a facilitator in the conference process. Students lead parents through a discussion of their work and established academic and social goals for themselves.
Your students have been working hard on their scripts & practicing for their Student Led Conference.
Important Information for Student Led Conferences
There is 10 minutes built in before and after your students conference. This will allow you time to find specific content teacher in the South Gym if you have specific questions. Each teacher will also have sign-up sheets if you run out of time for them to contact you to address your questions. We will have a Chromebook station set-up in the Cyclone Room, please consider stopping by to take a short 8 question survey. We need and appreciate your feedback, so we can continue to make student led conferences a beneficial experience for your family!
Assessment Day- March 24th 1/2 day for High School Students
When? Tuesday, March 24th 1/2 day for Ottawa High School Students. Students need to be at school by 7:45pm, thank you to Kansas State bank & other sponsors, we will have Chris Cakes breakfast for all students!
Why? The time leading up to big assessments can be stressful and cause many students anxiety. The day of the assessment is mentally taxing for most students. Assessment day allows our students attend school with only one focus-- their assessment. They can then go home, decompress & take a brain break before school resumes the following day.
Other Information: Students will be dismissed at 12:30pm, if a student needs transportation via our busses, they will have to wait until the conclusion of the day at 3:10pm. We will provide students a snack during a break within their testing session. Lunch will be served at 12:30pm.
Assessments Given:
9th Grade: ACT Aspire
10th Grade: State Assessments, English & Math
11th Grade: ACT
12th Grade: Work Keys
We will be sending home more information regarding each of these assessments soon! Students will be meeting with Mrs. Whittaker & counselors next week during Cyclone Hour to discuss Assessment Day!
Data Celebration
We offered some students the option to do a course completion at the end of the first semester. This was for any student who ended the semester with a 57-59% F in a course. We extended their oppertunity to display their knowledge and show their learning into 2nd semester.
Both parents & students were notified if this was an option. We had 33/49 course completion opportunities end in success.
This is our continued attempt in helping students understand the value of learning, not opting out of learning & creating an academic culture of learning at OHS!
Cyclone Hour
Tutoring is available today during B lunch in the English Commons area. Come if you need a study buddy or homework help!!
Please encourage your student to take advantage of this time to see teachers or work on assignments!

Please remember all fees must be paid prior to Prom and Graduation. This includes fees owed to USD 290 as well as food services. Fees can be paid online through Family
